Yankees vs Astros Odds, Picks and Predictions 3/28/24

Baseball fans rejoice! MLB Opening Day is here, and we have a doozy matchup to kick off your 2024 betting campaign, from MLB moneyline picks to totals and everything in between. The Houston Astros are set to host the New York Yankees on Thursday, with both teams coming off disappointing ends to the 2023 season.

While striving for a World Series title, the Houston Astros faced a setback last year, losing to the Texas Rangers in the ALCS after a challenging seven-game series. Despite this, their track record remains impressive: They have reached the World Series four times in the past seven years and secured the championship twice.

However, the offseason brought notable changes, particularly to their bullpen, with the departure of Hector Neris and Phil Maton. Additionally, the team witnessed the retirement of Michael Brantley and manager Dusty Baker. Joe Espada, who has been the team’s bench coach since 2018, is stepping into the managerial role. With his extensive knowledge of the team and the return of key players, Espada is well-positioned to guide the Astros toward another successful season.

As for Thursday, the Astros are -152 moneyline favorites with run line odds of +135 to win by -1½ points. Is Houston our best MLB spread pick for Thursday, or can the Yankees start the season strong with a victory over a rival franchise?

Starting Pitchers

Nestor Cortes (0-0, 0.00) vs. Framber Valdez (0-0, 0.00)

This is the section where I usually compare and contrast the two starters for whichever game I discuss. The trouble is, this being Opening Day, we have no stats for Nestor Cortes or Framber Valdez to dissect.

Valdez is a better player in a vacuum, but opening-day jitters can get to anyone. And while I don’t always trust Spring Training stats, Valdez’s 7.71 ERA during the preseason is something Astros fans should be concerned about.

Speaking of Spring Training, Cortes finished with an identical 7.71 ERA, leading me to speculate we could see an explosion of offense to open the season.

Yankees vs Astros Our Betting Predictions

In a notable piece of offseason MLB news, the Yankees enhanced their offensive capabilities by bringing in left-handed power hitter Juan Soto, a strategic addition to supporting Aaron Judge and addressing the batting challenges encountered last season. Concurrently, the Astros continue to impress with their lineup’s star quality, featuring Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez, who have been improving remarkably with every season.

Reflecting on last season’s performance, the Yankees were positioned 29th in the league for their batting average, managing only .227 with 219 home runs. Conversely, the Astros demonstrated superior batting skills with a .259 average, ranking 4th in the league, and connected with 222 home runs. Looking ahead, the Yankees are set to start with Cortes on the mound, who posted a 0-2 record and a 7.71 ERA during spring training.

In opposition, the Astros will deploy Valdez, who has a 7.71 ERA in spring training without a win or loss. Despite the spring training struggles faced by the starting pitchers from both teams, the Yankees are hopeful that the buzz generated by Soto’s recent addition will energize the team, potentially leading to a competitive performance or even a victory in their upcoming games.

Yankees vs Astros Best Over/Under Pick: Over 8½ (-115)

With Cortes and Valdez struggling mightily this spring, I feel like a bet online on the Over is prudent. Let’s not forget the firepower that each offense possesses. The Yankees already had a potent lineup headlined by Aaron Judge, but now, with Soto in the mix, the Bronx Bombers are likely to live up to their nickname for the first time in a long time.

Question Of The Day

What are the odds of the Yankees or Astros winning the World Series?

The Astros are +750 to go all the way, while the Yankees saw their MLB lines drop to +1000 after Gerrit Cole got injured.
