The New York Yankees go for a fifth straight win when they take on the host Oakland Athletics in the second of a four-game weekend series on Friday night. New York took the series opener 13-4 on Thursday night and is atop the AL East standings by 7½ games over the second-place Tampa Bay Rays. Yankees Only Get Better With Return Of Stanton
The New York Yankees are already leading the AL East by a wide margin, but they added to their deep lineup with the return to action of designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton on Thursday night. Stanton had been on the injured list since late July but picked up right where he left off, drawing a bases-loaded walk and hitting a two-run single to help New York to the series-opening win against the Oakland Athletics.
“The timing’s the most difficult part, but I’ve got to do extra drills before the game and while I’m down to the kind of keep my timing and make sure it’s not too much of an adjustment,” Stanton said after Thursday’s win.
Stanton is batting .229 with six doubles, 24 home runs, 64 RBIs and 40 runs scored in 81 games.
Third baseman Josh Donaldson was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored in Thursday’s victory.
Right-hander Gerrit Cole will be on the mound, bringing a 9-6 record and 3.41 ERA to his 26th start. Cole has 189 strikeouts in 150⅓ innings, which ties him for second in the majors. He took the loss in his last outing, facing the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday and allowing four runs on five hits while striking out five and walking two over six innings.
Athletics Need More from Mound
It’s not easy to shut down the New York Yankees offense, but the Oakland Athletics are going to need more from their pitchers if they’re going to be competitive in this series. Oakland allowed 20 hits and issued six walks in Thursday’s series-opening loss, numbers that must get better going forward.
Rookie left-hander JP Sears will face his former team when he makes his fourth start for Oakland. Sears pitched in seven games, making two starts, for the Yankees this season before being dealt to the Athletics.
Overall, Sears is 5-0 with a 1.93 ERA, striking out 23 in 37⅓ innings. He won for the second time with Oakland in his last game, going five innings against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday and allowing one run on six hits while striking out three and walking one.
Catcher Shea Langeliers was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in Thursday’s loss. Langeliers is batting .294 with four doubles, a triple, two home runs, seven RBIs and six runs scored in nine games since being called up to the majors earlier this month.
