Milwaukee Chasing NL Wild Card Spot
The Milwaukee Brewers try to make it two straight wins over the visiting New York Yankees when the teams continue their weekend series on Saturday night.
Milwaukee has won six of its last eight and is 1½ games behind the San Diego Padres for the final Wild-Card spot in the National League. New York had its four-game winning streak snapped with Friday’s setback and leads the AL East by 5½ games over the second-place Toronto Blue Jays.
The series opener was a tight affair, so make sure you read our in-depth preview of Saturday’s game to help with your bet online.
Yankees Can’t Hold Lead in Opening Loss
The New York Yankees started Friday night’s series opener fast, jumping to a 5-0 lead after 1½ innings. But the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to tie the game at 5, then took the lead before New York tied it back up in the top of the ninth, which didn’t last, as the Brewers walked it off in the bottom of the frame.
Right-hander Jameson Taillon will take the mound for the second game of the series for New York. Taillon is 13-4 with a 3.94 ERA in 28 starts. He picked up a win in his last outing, going 7⅓ innings against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sept. 10 and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking one.
Outfielder Aaron Judge was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored in Friday’s loss. Judge is batting .311 (seventh in baseball) and leads the majors with 57 home runs, 123 RBIs and 119 runs scored.
Third baseman Josh Donaldson was 1-for-4 with three RBIs, including a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth, on Friday. Donaldson is batting .221 with 26 doubles, 14 home runs, 55 RBIs and 51 runs scored.
Adames, Mitchell Star In Brewers’ Comeback Win
The Milwaukee Brewers need all the wins they can get at this time of the season, and they got a big one on Friday night, walking it off on Garrett Mitchell’s two-out RBI single in the ninth.
Mitchell’s single drove in Hunter Renfroe with the winning run, making him the first Milwaukee rookie to walk-off a game since 2019.
“For me, going up there, I really don’t have anything to lose,” Mitchell said after Friday’s win. “Yeah, you can look back at what’s happened to this point and the at-bats that I’ve had. For me, going up there and thinking about those or worrying about those is not going to help me in that situation. You just have to continue to look forward and look for those opportunities.”
Willy Adames had a big game, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run that got the Milwaukee comeback started. Adames is batting .237 with 27 doubles, 29 home runs, 89 RBIs, and 76 runs scored.
The Brewers will have right-hander Brandon Woodruff on the mound. Woodruff is 10-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 23 starts, striking out 152 in 127⅓ innings. He got a win against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, throwing six innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 11 and walking one.
Yankees vs Brewers Head-To-Head
The Milwaukee Brewers are looking for their third straight season series victory against the New York Yankees, having taken the last two in 2014 and 2017. Milwaukee has won three of the four series between these teams since it moved to the National League in 1998 and this became a much rarer series to be played.
The Brewers are 5-2 against the Yankees at home since this became an interleague matchup. The MLB lines for Saturday’s matchup are favoring Milwaukee to continue that success at home.
