The New York Yankees better hope they made the most of their day off on Thursday when they suit up against the Chicago Cubs to kick off a weekend series in the Windy City on Friday. After re-taking the lead in the AL East, the Bronx Bombers stumbled to a 4-6 record in their last 10 games while they watched the Baltimore Orioles move ahead in the standings. Now, a half-game back of the Birds, the Yankees have a winable series ahead of them. The Cubs, however, are on a heater, winning seven of their last 10.

Gil Makes His Return to the Rotation

For better or worse, Luis Gil will return to action on Friday from the 15-day injured list after suffering a back injury. Gil last pitched on August 20th in a 9-5 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, which saw the righty give up three runs on three hits over three innings. He walked a gag-inducing six batters in that game.

Normally, getting a part of your rotation back is excellent news, but Gil wasn’t so successful in the few starts before his injury. In August, he posted a 5.25 ERA and a very concerning 13 walks compared to 12 strikeouts. The Chicago Cubs, meanwhile, are a very patient team at the plate and rank 6th in walks on offense with an average of 3.36 per game. If Gil’s control issues were not injury-related, he could be in for another tough day regarding free passes at the plate.

It should come as no surprise that Gil, with a WHIP of 1.20, also leads the MLB in walks with 66 in 24 games. He may be 12-6, but it’s hard for me to trust a guy with such poor command with a bet online in favor of the team he is pitching for.

The Cubs, meanwhile, will send Jordan Wicks to the bump on Friday. Hicks is 2-2 with a 3.82 ERA and a pretty ugly WHIP himself at 1.36. He pitches much better at home and hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in his last five starts. But still, much like Gil, walks are a problem at times.

With two pitchers with tendencies to issue free passes and a couple of heavy-hitting lineups, I’m inclined to use my MLB pick for this game on the Over. The total is 7.5 runs for Game 1.

The Cubs have the second highest Over ROI in the MLB over the last two weeks at 42.24% with a 7-2-1 record. The Yankees are 7-3 in that span with a 32.74% ROI. The Yanks also rank fourth in the league when looking at the season-long stats with a 79-59-4 Over record and an 8.71% ROI.
