Picks, Prediction for Yankees vs Mariners on Tuesday, May 30
The visiting New York Yankees flexed their muscles in the series opener with nine extra-base hits to chase talented rookie starter Bryce Young as the Yankees inched a little closer to American League East rivals Tampa Bay and Baltimore. The MLB picks favor the Seattle Mariners to even the series with Logan Gilbert set to get the start.
New York is 8-3 over the last 11 games. While they are third in the American League, the Yankees’ record would be good enough to lead two of the other five divisions. Seattle dropped behind the Los Angeles Angels and into fourth place in the American League West.
Ten of the 14 runs in the series opener came courtesy of extra-base hits. Keep that in mind when it comes time to make MLB predictions.
The Yankees lead the AL with 50 home runs in May, with their .473 slugging percentage ranking fourth. Seattle is sixth in the majors with a 3.66 ERA and fifth with 236 strikeouts in May.
When looking at MLB news, Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo is questionable after missing the series opener with a wrist injury. The Yankees continue to play without outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and third baseman Josh Donaldson. Seattle outfielder A.J. Pollock has missed the last five games with a leg injury.

Judge Does It All
The focus in the series opener was on Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German as he returned from a 10-game suspension for having too much rosin on his pitching hand. It didn’t take long before reigning American League MVP Aaron Judge put his stamp on the game.
Judge broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run home run in the third inning. He added a solo shot in the sixth inning, had a double and reached over the wall to deny Seattle of its second home run of the game as the Yankees won 10-4.

Judge has three home runs in the last two games and leads all qualified major league hitters with a .679 slugging percentage.
Judge had 18 home runs by the end of May during the 2022 season on his way to setting the American League record with 62. He is currently at 17, with two games left in May.
Judge had three home runs and two doubles among his six hits against the Mariners a season ago.
The MLB odds total has gone over in 14 of the Yankees’ last 21 games.
What a Difference a Year Makes
It could be argued that no player in the majors has made a bigger jump from 2022 to 2023 than Seattle Mariners outfielder Jarred Kelenic.
The Yankees discovered that on Monday. Kelenic was 1-for-16 with seven strikeouts against the Yankees last season.
In the series opener, Kelenic had two hits, scored a run and stole a base in the 10-4 win. It was the 12th multi-hit game of the season for Kelenic and the Mariners are now 8-4 when he has at least two hits.

Starting Pitchers
Nestor Cortes (4-2, 5.30 ERA) vs Logan Gilbert (3-2, 3.60)
A year ago, this would have been one of the most anticipated pitching matchups of the week. Cortes was 4-1 with a 1.70 ERA heading into June a season ago with Gilbert 5-2 with a 2.29 ERA.
It has been a different story in 2023. Cortes has allowed at least four runs in three of his last five starts. He has surrendered four home runs in his last three outings. The last time he faced the Mariners, he gave up three hits and three runs with 10 strikeouts in six innings.
Gilbert has dropped his ERA from 4.23 to 3.60 since the start of May. He has pitched into the sixth inning in each of his last five starts. In two starts against the Yankees in 2022, Gilbert allowed 17 hits, four home runs and 13 runs in 9⅓ innings, which is something to keep in mind for MLB live betting options.
