There were no Jacob deGrom sightings after some speculation that the two-time Cy Young Award winner might make his 2022 debut for the New York Mets against the rival Yankees.
Even without deGrom getting the call, Wednesday’s pitching matchup is pretty intriguing. Domingo German, an 18-game winner for New York three seasons ago, will make his second start of the season. Max Scherzer will get the call for the Mets.
The last time Scherzer pitched on his birthday, he allowed three hits and one run with 11 strikeouts in a win over Miami in 2018.

Things got off to an explosive start in Tuesday’s opener with each team hitting two home runs in the first inning.
The Yankees have the second-most road wins among American League teams while the Mets join the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers as the only teams with at least 30 wins both at home and on the road.

Judge Swinging Hot Bat
Aaron Judge was struggling a bit earlier this month. He was 9-for-45 with five extra-base hits and two home runs in the first 12 games he played during the month of June. Four of those hits and two of those extra-base hits came in a two-game set against a Pittsburgh Pirates team that is 26th in the majors in earned run average.
Judge is back crushing the ball with at least two hits in six of his last nine outings. He has five home runs in his last five games and over the last four, he is hitting .588 with four home runs and nine RBIs.
Judge hit .238 against the Mets in 2021 although three of his five hits were home runs. Judge is doing all of this without one of the other top power hitters in the lineup for the Yankees. Giancarlo Stanton hasn’t played since Saturday and is on the 10-day injured list with left Achilles’ tendinitis.

Alonso Heating Up
This could sound familiar as Alonso has followed the same script as Judge. He had a slow start in July. Alonso was batting .208 in the first 19 games in July. He had just two home runs during that span.
Alonso is 7-for-10 with three doubles, a home run and five RBIs in the last three games. He is leading the majors with 83 RBIs and is third in the National League with a .541 slugging percentage.
Alonso is on pace for 139 RBIs and that would be the most for a National League hitter since 2009. He is attempting to become the first player from the New York Mets to lead the National League in RBIs since Howard Johnson in 1991. No Mets player has led the majors in RBIs. There could be more history as there has never been a season when each league’s RBI leader played for New York franchises.

Yankees vs Mets Predictions
It is hard to know what to expect from German. After missing the 2020 season, he is just 4-6 with a 4.88 ERA. His first start of 2022 didn’t go that well as he allowed six hits, two home runs, and five runs in three innings in a loss to Houston on July 21.
