Yankees at the Advantage
The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers will renew their three-game series with Wednesday’s matchup, the second in the tie after the visiting Yanks took game one 4-2.
The first pitch will be thrown out Wednesday inside Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, at 6:40 p.m. ET.
Yankees’ Race For the Pennant
The New York Yankees, just as they are more times than not, were one of the most popular MLB picks to win the American League and make the World Series, even in an ultra-competitive division. They have not hit their championship stride yet, however, only managing a 6-5 record and recently losing a series to the lowly Baltimore Orioles. Still, their game one win was telling; Adam Hicks had his fingerprints all over the game, walking and scoring twice and smacking an RBI.
Hicks and LeMahieu could be considered New York’s best players up to this point in the season, which is not what you would expect from a team with Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the payroll. New signings Josh Donaldson and Joey Gallo have also been awful, with the pair averaging .182 and .121 at the plate, respectively.
Luis Severino will be on the bump for the pinstripers, boasting a 1-0 record and 2.25 earned run average thus far. The 28-year-old made a meager seven appearances from 2019 to 2021 but has gotten off to a solid start this year, only allowing two earned runs in eight innings of action.
Detroit’s Inconsistent Play
The Detroit Tigers are 4-6 this season and have followed a strange pattern of wins and losses, failing to string any sort of consistency together. They lost the first game in the series 4-2 despite scoring both runs in the second and getting New York’s star pitcher Gerritt Cole pulled after a career-low five out, ultimately getting shut down for the rest of the game. They lost their last matchup against an AL East team (Boston Red Sox) 1-2.
The Tigers are the third-worst team at the plate and one of four squads hitting under .200. Austin Meadows and Javier Baez (currently on the 10-day injured list) have been their best players thus far, although that is not saying much for a team averaging just three runs per game. Detroit has to figure things out in the box before they will compete with any of the more highly-rated teams.
Eduardo Rodriguez (0-1, 5.87 ERA) will get the starting nod for the Tigers and will look to improve on a 3.2-inning, two-earned run outing in his last start.
Yankees vs Tigers Head-to-Head
The only meeting between these two teams ended 4-2 in favor of the Yankees on Tuesday. They split their 2021 matchups 3-3; New York swept the first three-game series, and Detroit swept the second.

Yankees vs Tigers Betting Lines
Yankees vs Tigers Prediction
The MLB lines show clear favoritism towards the Yankees after their game one win— however, it is not that open and shut.
New York has matched Detroit’s inconsistency all season long, and Detroit’s starting pitcher, Rodriguez, played for the Boston Red Sox as recently as last season, meaning that he probably still has some disdain for them.
According to the recent pattern, it is about time the Tigers settle down and get a win, but take the spread just for comfort. The Yankees are big in name but have struggled to put runs on the board, which means there is serious value to spotting the Tigers a run and a half.
