YRFI/NRFI Picks 8/6: Just Bet No to Early Offense at Coors

  • Luis Severino looks to give the New York Mets a strong start
  • Orioles-Blue Jays match up once again
  • Read on for some advice on how to pick these games – and more – at the BetUS Sportsbook.

We nailed our one and only pick Monday night (the second one had a change to its starting pitchers) and we’re primed and ready for another payday on Tuesday. It’s our favorite day of action each week in the majors with every team playing and all of them coming at night, so you can really pack in the winning MLB picks.

3 YRFI/NRFI Picks for Aug. 6

1. Mets at Rockies: Kyle Lovin’ Coors

We love heading to Coors Field from time to time if the matchup is right, and this one fits the bill. Kyle Freeland will start for the host Colorado Rockies against Luis Severino for the visiting New York Mets.

Freeland has posted six quality starts in seven outings overall since coming off the injured list in June. He owns a 2.91 ERA overall in that solid stretch, including a 1.42 mark in three home starts.

The veteran lefty, who took over the top spot for all-time losses in franchise history two turns ago, has a 1.88 ERA overall at home this year, bucking those MLB odds that usually lean toward high-scoring affairs at Coors. Oh, one more ERA – he has a 2.52 mark in five career outings vs New York.

Beware that the Mets like hitting lefties, but also that they rank 27th in the majors in first-inning scoring percentage (21.43). They’re also doing some shuffling atop the lineup to find the right fit.

Severino has faced every team in the majors at least once in his career with the exception of his former Yankees and these Rockies. So this is a Coors Field debut for the righty, which can be a tricky proposition.

With no history in the altitude, we’ll ignore those effects for now and focus on what Severino brings to the first-inning picture. He owns a 1.29 ERA in that frame while limiting opponents to a tiny .496 OPS.

The Rockies have done some first-inning damage at home this year but not as much lately. Severino should cruise early.

Bet On Mets-Rockies First Inning to Score – NO

2. Orioles at Blue Jays: Bassitt Not Lovin’ Baltimore

These two teams at opposite ends of the AL East picture took Monday off before beginning this series at Rogers Centre. Chris Bassitt will get the nod for the Toronto Blue Jays, hoping for a better result than the one he had at Camden Yards last week.

Bassitt lasted only four innings against the Baltimore Orioles in that one, giving up five runs on a season high-tying nine hits. That left him 1-4 with a 7.01 ERA in five July starts.

One of Baltimore’s five runs vs Bassitt did come in the opening frame. Opponents are now hitting .292 against the 35-year-old in the first and he’s issued 10 walks in those 22 innings, so there’s been plenty of traffic on the bases.

The Orioles have soared up the first-inning offensive rankings and now sit at sixth overall in OPS (.777) and seven in runs per first (0.54). This is a great spot against a struggling veteran for them to bump those figures up even more.

Grayson Rodriguez had a quality start against Toronto last week but it wasn’t the cleanest effort. The Jays put up a single run in each of the last four innings Rodriguez was out there (one of the runs was unearned).

The former first-round pick did have a scoreless first in that one, but he has a 5.40 ERA in the opening stanza this year. Opponents’ .787 OPS in the first is the highest against Rodriguez over the first six innings.

Toronto is a middle-of-the-pack first-inning attack at home, where it scores 27.78% of the time. There’s a chance here to pad those numbers against Rodriguez.

Bet On Orioles-Blue Jays First Inning to Score – YES

3. Giants at Nationals: Birdsong Flies Into DC

We nailed a YRFI bet online in this matchup on Monday as the Giants scored early en route to a 4-1 win. They’re surging with eight wins in their last 10 games and have a chance on Tuesday to move over .500 for the first time since late-May.

They’ll try to get there behind young star Hayden Birdsong, who will be making his seventh start for San Francisco. The standout right-hander enters at 3-0 with a 2.97 ERA and will be up against a Washington lineup that produced just six hits on Monday and ranks last in the majors in first-inning scoring percentage (17.07).

This is a great opportunity for the righty to start another game on the right foot. He’s yet to allow a first-inning run in six starts.

Mackenzie Gore goes for the hosts. He’s had some real choppy moments in recent weeks and the Giants usually love facing lefties, but we’ll give Gore a chance to get through one unscathed. He has a 2.05 ERA in that frame with an eye-popping 31 strikeouts in 22 first innings overall.

Bet On Giants-Nationals First Inning to Score – NO

Question of the Day

Any other MLB bets that look appetizing?

The Cardinals have cooled off a bit, scoring just two runs over their last two games, and face Jeffrey Springs in his second start since coming back from Tommy John surgery. Springs hasn’t found his groove yet but we like him to stifle St. Louis for the first half of this game.
