Bank on Fireworks (and Points) for CFL Week 5 Fourth of July Weekend

  • Expect plenty of high-scoring games for CFL Week 5 led by teams like Montreal and BC
  • The highest total for Week 5 is between BC and Hamilton at 53
  • Winnipeg is 0-4 in the season and rematches Ottawa, which it lost to three weeks ago as a favorite

Yes, the CFL is Canadian. But that won’t stop a pair of teams from lighting up the scoreboard with some fireworks on Fourth of July weekend. Toronto and Saskatchewan, the best teams to bet on the over, start off CFL Week 5 while prolific BC closes it out against Hamilton. The best CFL bets could be on the totals to go over as the season heats up for the summer.

Montreal, BC Top Scoring Bets in CFL Week 5

The CFL’s top two offenses play this week and look to stay hot. The Montreal Alouettes have been unstoppable as they prepare to host Calgary. They are coming off a demolition job of the Toronto Argonauts to improve to 4-0. Averaging a CFL-best 31.8 points, good luck stopping them.

As for the Lions, they got by the Elks and are averaging nearly 26 points. They could be in a barnburner against a fellow feline-themed outfit when they visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Lions, Tiger-Cats Get into a Catfight

BC heads to Hamilton looking to extend the Tiger-Cats’ winless skid to five games this season. The “Tabbies” are also the only East team yet to cover a spread. More notably, the total is the highest for Week 5 at 53 points thanks to a porous Tiger-Cats defense. Hamilton ranks in the bottom (or near it) in points allowed. That’s also why three of its four games this season have gone over the total.

As such, BC is also favored by 5 points here. However, the Lions are only 1-6 against the spread (ATS) following a straight-up victory. And they are just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games. BC tends to get into close contests, as it did with Edmonton and Winnipeg.

It may be tough to lay the points when betting online. Betting the over may be a sounder proposition.

Alouettes to Roll Past Stampeders

The Alouettes improved to 11-1-1 ATS in their last 13 games going back to last season. Now, they’re whopping 9½-point favorites hosting the Stampeders. That’s -470 on the moneyline and implies an 83.3% winning probability. Now is not the time to bet online against Montreal. Calgary is also not that team.

The Stampeders are riding high from upsetting Winnipeg. But seeing how the Blue Bombers have fallen off a cliff, offensively, we can’t put much stock in that victory. Calgary is also 2-8 ATS in its last 10 meetings with Montreal. And like the Lions-Tiger-Cats, we have a total in the 50s at 50½. However, they are a combined 2-5 in their totals.

If Montreal is to win and cover, it will likely do it by neutralizing Calgary.

Winnipeg vs Ottawa Rematch

Over to Ottawa, we have a tasty rematch between the Redblacks and Blue Bombers. Ottawa upset Winnipeg as an underdog and is pegged as one again at +2½. The game is in Winnipeg this time, though the Bombers are 0-2 here. Is it still too early to keep fading the Bombers? They look washed up.

Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros has 796 passing yards through four games. More alarmingly, he has not thrown any touchdowns but has four interceptions. Collaros and the Bombers just look like a mess and it’s tough backing them. Every dynasty collapses at some point and this looks like the beginning of Winnipeg’s end.

Ottawa is just 1-6 ATS in its last seven games. But it is 2-1 for the season, with its defeat coming against Montreal. Given the recent forms of these teams, we’d take the points on Ottawa on the CFL football odds.
