Blue Bombers Already Reeling Entering Week 2 of CFL

The first week of the CFL season never disappoints. We saw that when Toronto and Montreal both pulled off big upsets in their openers. On the flip side, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers got their butts kicked. The shocking results moved the outright CFL football odds. However, Winnipeg rides into CFL Week 2 as another wide favorite. And it is still atop the odds as the likeliest Grey Cup champion.

Blue Bombers, Alouettes Lead Week 2 Storylines

Winnipeg was a six-point favorite at home vs. Montreal in CFL Week 1. But Montreal blew out Winnipeg 27-12. It was one of the worst showings from the Blue Bombers as their rust – many did not play in preseason, including quarterback Zach Collaros – was evident. Can they bounce back against the Ottawa Redblacks? The online sports betting odds say “yes!” with a vengeance.

Can We Still Trust Winnipeg?

If you’re new to CFL betting and laid chalk on the Bombers in Week 1, they look like mighty frauds right now. Heading to Ottawa, there is a decent chance Winnipeg starts 0-2. While the Bombers should be pissed after Week 1, Ottawa may be better prepared. And if we’re laying 6½ on Winnipeg against the spread (ATS), it’s hard to bet on the Bombers.

Sergio Castillo has issues kicking the new “chip footballs.” And while he and Collaros will be better for Week 2, the Redblacks have had an entire offseason to prepare for this game. Dru Brown starts against his former team and All-Star Dominique Rhymes is back at slotback (slot receiver).

On defense, the Redblacks had the third-most takeaways and fourth-most sacks last year. Even if this unit allowed plenty of yards, it has plenty of playmakers. In the CFL, one turnover can swing the momentum. Winnipeg committed four turnovers last week. It’s still rusty and may be prone for another upset.

What About the B.C. Lions?

The B.C. Lions are the other favorite that lost last week. The Lions opened as a six-point favorite. The public bet that down to five points and profited as the Toronto Argonauts edged the Lions 35-27. Toronto was 2-of-2 in the red zone and forced five turnovers by BC. Vernon Adams Jr. was prolific for B.C. but could not come up with the plays when it mattered. So can we bet online on B.C. as a whopping 7½-point favorite versus Calgary?

The Stampeders edged Hamilton and looked solid doing it. They scored 32 points and committed no turnovers despite getting gashed on the ground (156 yards, 9.2 yards per carry average). On top of that, Calgary has covered or pushed in three of its last four road games (2-1-1). These teams exchanged double-figure victories in three meetings last year.

The best bet online here could be in the total at 50½. These teams can score in bunches so we may be in for a treat as the highest total of CFL Week 2 indicates.

Montreal Alouettes Rolling into Edmonton With Confidence

While Winnipeg and B.C. get back to the drawing board, the Alouettes look to stay hot. Montreal’s opening week victory extended its win streak to eight games. The Als are now also 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games. They have covered against Toronto and Winnipeg twice each. And they beat Edmonton 35-21 in their arena. Hence, we have a five-point spread for the visitor.

The Elks are supposedly a revitalized franchise this season, but they had an ugly showing in their Week 1 loss. Edmonton could not run the ball and committed 11 penalties for 101 yards. It also had three giveaways. Credit Saskatchewan for being razor-focused on defense. But we’ll keep our money before wagering Edmonton as a +205 dog.

The Alouettes are tough to bet against right now. And the defense continues to be adept at forcing turnovers. Betting the under 48 in the total could be the sharp play in the sportsbook.
