Champion Eater Finishes Off 62 Legendary Franks

Mother Nature was no match for Joey Chestnut.

After a chaotic few hours that saw lightning and rain “cancel” the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on the Fourth of July, the champion chomper went out and devoured 62 franks in 10 minutes to win the title for the 16th time and 8th in a row.

Halfway through, Chestnut was at 40 hot dogs and opened up a margin of James Webb of Great Britain.

Chestnut kept motoring through the meat and opened up a dozen dog margin after 8 minutes.

He wound up with 62 wins and had a 13-dog margin over Geoffrey Esper, who had 49.

“What a roller coaster emotionally,” Chestnut said. “They told us it was canceled. Everybody got messed up.

“I feel great. I have leftover room so I’ll have some beers later. … I will be coming back.”

As for trying to set a World Record, breaking his current mark of 76.

“I’m gonna figure it out,” Chestnut said. “Seventy-seven is doable.”

As for what he was planning on Tuesday night, “A liquid diet.”

On the women’s side, Miko Sudo won with 39.5 dogs. The women’s competition took place prior to the rainstorm.

Chestnut and Sudo were overwhelming favorites in the odds to win the contest at BetUS; where there are always the tastiest props and a buffet of options.
