Provincial foes renew hostilities when the Toronto Argonauts host the Ottawa Redblacks for the East Division Semifinals. The Canadian football odds favor the home team as these teams do much better in friendly confines. But this is the CFL playoffs. This is not as cut-and-dry as other sports leagues. Upsets happen as the gap between these teams is not as wide as the lines indicate. You can surmise where we are going with our picks.

2 Best Picks for Redblacks vs Argonauts
1. Ottawa Can Toronto a Run for Its Money
Will Ottawa pull off the upset here? The CFL betting trends say otherwise. The Redblacks are just 2-6 as a visitor this season and have lost six of their last seven meetings with Toronto. However, Ottawa did get a nice shot in the arm via its win over Hamilton. Quarterback Dru Brown may just be the spark plug this team needs to shake things up.

“It feels good going into the playoffs with a victory,” Redblacks coach Bob Dyce told sports news outlets. “There’s a lot of positives to build off in that game. The defense made some plays early and they made the most important plays of the game with the one-yard line stop. That’s what you have to do in clutch moments and be your best. They did that.”
Ottawa’s defense has given up 31+ in its last two games but is typically the team’s strength. The Redblacks rank in the top four in sacks, yards per play allowed, and opposing QB rating. Notably, Ottawa’s defense gets better as the game progresses. If it can lock Toronto down, this may just allow Brown and the offense to rally.
It won’t be easy as Toronto is starting to find its form. The Argos have won three of their last four games, which include Winnipeg and Montreal. Toronto is also 7-2 at home and has covered in four of its last five Semifinals.
For my CFL expert pick, I would love to take Ottawa to win, but Toronto still has the edge. However, we will take the points on the underdogs as this one will be close.

2. Bet on a Defensive Duel Between Ontarian Rivals, Go With the Under
If Ottawa is to keep this close, it will have to lean on its defense. Brown is a frisky QB but Ottawa will get boat-raced if it tries to outscore Toronto. We’ll bet online on Ottawa to keep the scoring under the total of 52 points. Recent trends suggest a high-scoring game as four of Ottawa’s last five division games have.
But these teams still feature two of the best defensive lines in the league. Toronto leads the CFL in sacks and can pressure Brown all game. Ottawa, on the other hand, is adept at forcing turnovers. We all know what happened with Chad Kelly the last time he played in the playoffs.

Toronto has options outside of Kelly. But even if the team led the CFL in scoring (28.6 points per game), it has some weakness. The Argos give up the third-most sacks and commit many penalties (6.5 per game). Combined with Ottawa’s opportunistic defense, we may see Toronto underperform on the CFL scores.
The best bet here is to take the under despite the lofty scoring potential present.
