Wave of Underdogs Best Bets in CFL Week 4

Entering Week 4 of the 2024 CFL season, favorites and underdogs are evenly matched. This is if we’re looking at the point spreads. Each side is an even 6-6-0 against the spread (ATS) so bettors would be on the losing end had they bet strictly on one side. However, Week 4 could change that for the underdogs. Led by the Edmonton Elks, this looks to be the sharp side on the CFL betting lines.

Potential Stunner Heads CFL Week 4 Best Bets

Edmonton visits BC in a short week and is Week 4’s largest underdog. The Elks are winless (0-3) but are also 2-1 ATS this season. This moribund franchise is slowly showing signs of life so bettors should be wary of fading it. This may not be the same team that set records for futility. As such, given the CFL odds, Edmonton may be worth a look, but it’s not the only underdog with a bite this week.

Underdog Elks Pose Threat to BC Lions

The Elks head to BC after a second straight field goal loss. While Edmonton has yet to notch a W, this team is improving. However, heading to BC with just a few days’ rest is not ideal. Hence, Edmonton opened as an eight-point underdog. And this line has been bet back and forth and currently sits at +7½ on the sportsbook.

“To me, it’s astounding that a league with nine teams can’t figure out how to not play on a five-day week,” Elks quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson told 630 CHED’s Dave Campbell regarding the short turnaround. “If this league cares anything about player safety, it shouldn’t happen.”

Bethel-Thompson has played admirably for Edmonton with 978 passing yards and six touchdowns. However, the Elks are not giving him much support on the ground. BC’s defense is subpar, hence the total is 52½ points, the highest for CFL Week 4. But BC’s Vernon Adams Jr., Bethel Thompson’s counterpart, leads the CFL in passing yards.

This could be a BC blowout or a back-and-forth shootout with Edmonton covering. We’re for the latter.

Argonauts Host Red-Hot Alouettes in Battle of Unbeatens

The Toronto Argonauts handed the Elks their third straight loss last week. Toronto narrowly defeated Edmonton as a 5½-point favorite. Now, the odds flip, and Toronto is +3 hosting Montreal. The Alouettes (3-0) have been unstoppable and embarrassed Ottawa 47-21. They are now 10-1-1 ATS in their last 12 games and 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven division games.

Depending on how you look at it, laying three points on Montreal (opened at -3½) is a deal given their recent form. The Als also upset Toronto in the Division Finals last year. But Toronto has also won seven of its last 10 games against Montreal. On top of that, the Argos are 15-5-1 ATS in their last 20 home games.

Cameron Dukes has also been solid for Toronto at QB. While Montreal has the best defense he has yet to face, the Argos also have a shrewd D. The total of 50½ seems too high given the top-caliber defenses on each side.

We’d lean on the under and for Toronto cover or even pull off the upset. But it’s hard to go against Montreal right now.

Calgary Looks to Extend Winnipeg’s Skid

Despite being 0-3, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers visit Calgary as 3½-point favorites. Winnipeg is also 0-3 ATS and its 18.3-point average is last in the CFL. We’re not burying this team yet and neither are oddsmakers. It’s only a matter of time before Winnipeg wakes up and lights up a team. But it may not be this week.

Calgary is underwritten. The Stampeders have had an extra week to prepare against Winnipeg. They did decently in a loss to BC as they held the Lions to 26 points. The concerning area for Calgary is its offense. The Stampeders were held to 17 points and were just mediocre in 2023. That won’t cut it if Winnipeg can get back to form.

But at this point, it’s better to bet on the dog or pass. Winnipeg is 9-1 in its last 10 games against Calgary. But the Stamps are also 5-2 in their last seven home games. This one may come down to a field goal and we’ll take the points for Calgary.
