Bettor’s Report: What Happened in F1 in 2023?

Max Verstappen happened for F1 in 2023. That’s it. That’s the post. But in all seriousness, the Red Bull man dominated the season to the point that fans started tuning out by the halfway point. Verstappen set numerous records and was easily one of the best bets in F1 despite consistently getting short lines in nearly every market. But is his the only story worth recapping for F1 this 2023?

Red Bulls Runs the Tables

It was not entirely a one-man show in 2023. Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s running mate, also had a solid season. While he spent a good part struggling, particularly during qualifying, Perez still finished second in the driver standings. He was also one of only two racers who won a grand prix outside of Verstappen. “Checo” helped Red Bull set an historic year.

Red Bull finished with 860 points, which was not only an F1 record but also more than the next two teams’ combined points (815). The constructor easily won the title and only those who bet early, preferably before the season started, would have gotten good F1 odds on the team.

Folks can now expect Red Bull to open the 2024 F1 season with short online sports betting lines. Despite the improvements of some teams in the latter half of the season, Red Bull still looks to be a solid F1 pick.

Best of the Field: Ferrari Rallies, McLaren Surprises

Fans of the other teams had to settle for other F1 betting markets to get any returns. Ferrari and McLaren had rough starts to the season. But they were two of the best teams later on. The Italian constructor salvaged third place thanks to Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc’s efforts.

Sainz pulled off a stunner when he won both the race and pole position in Singapore. He was the only driver to win a race outside Red Bull. Meanwhile, Leclerc finished the season strong with two second-place finishes. He’d have finished fourth in the standings had it not been for a disqualification.

McLaren also rallied after a brutal start. By the British Grand Prix, the 10th race on the calendar, McLaren became the highest-scoring team next to Red Bull. Lando Norris had six second-place finishes as he led the team to a fourth-place finish.

Mercedes quietly finished in second and just edged Ferrari for the spot. Lewis Hamilton’s team was the most consistent at accumulating top-six points from the runner-ups. But the team failed to win a race for the first time since 2011.

And rounding out the top five is Aston Martin. Two-time champion Fernando Alonso did the heavy lifting for this team as he started strong with six podium finishes in his first eight races. Unfortunately, the team could not keep up the pace and finished fifth.
