Scuderia Ferrari has been all over the headlines lately, and not just because of the exciting F1 news of Lewis Hamilton joining the team next year! They’ve also been buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, where they’ll be showing off a special edition car design.

The much-anticipated special edition livery has finally been revealed. The design incorporates two shades of blue alongside the team’s traditional red, and the initial response has been divided.

This design change marks a dual celebration for Ferrari: 70 years of presence in the North American market and the team’s new title sponsor, Hewlett-Packard (HP).

A Trip Down Memory Lane

The blue hues, Azzurro La Plata and Azzurro Dino hold historical significance for Ferrari. During the 1960s, blue was a prominent color within the team, evident in mechanics’ overalls and even the racing suits of legendary drivers like John Surtees. The special Miami livery also features a design element reminiscent of Ferrari cars from the 1960s, specifically the 158 F1 car that secured Surtees’ championship win in 1964.

We will be celebrating our heritage through a unique livery, rediscovering two colors that are part of our history,” said team principal Frederic Vasseur. “It will also be a very special race as we are glad to welcome the arrival of our new title partner HP.

Mixed Reactions from Fans

This special edition has generated conversation among fans, with some applauding the historical references and the vibrant aesthetic suited for the Miami race. However, others have expressed reservations about the design, ranging from concerns about the number of HP logos to the overall tastefulness of the livery. A few comments online have even likened the car’s appearance to a cartoonish superhero vehicle.

The Miami Grand Prix will be the first race to showcase the special livery. Complementing the car’s special livery, Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. will be outfitted in blue race suits. Additionally, both drivers have unveiled revised helmet designs that incorporate the same blue hues featured on the cars.

F1 rumors mention that this probably won’t be the only occasion during the season in which Ferrari uses a special livery.

Ferrari has experimented with colors beyond their signature red on a few occasions in the past, with special liveries at the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix (celebrating their 1000th Grand Prix appearance) and their 2022 F1 schedule home race (incorporating yellow). The 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix also saw an adjustment with additional white accents. The reception of this Miami edition will undoubtedly add another chapter to Scuderia’s ever-evolving design story.
