The Indianapolis 500 returns for its 2022 edition on May 29 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. There have been five races this season, and the two championship leaders are yet to win. Will one score a first-time victory at the Indy 500?
Four Favorites to Fade
The Indy 500 betting odds have four drivers currently tied as favorites to win the race. Those are Colton Herta, Alex Palou, Josef Newgarden, and Scott Dixon. Palou battled well in last year’s 500 but ultimately was passed by Helio Castroneves with two laps remaining and finished in second place.
While all four of these drivers are favorites (+800) to win the 2022 Indy 500, the betting odds appear to be a bit unfavorable here. All four are highly skilled, extremely technical, and have great cars. Unfortunately, the line is too low to comfortably bet on any of these drivers.

Longshot Legends To Make You Money
The Indy 500 is a race where anything can happen. Eight current drivers have won the race in the past, and three of them (Takuma Sato, Castroneves, and Juan Pablo Montoya) have won the race multiple times. In fact, last year’s winner Castroneves (currently +1600) has won a record-tying four times and will look to break that record.
Due to the price of the favorites, longshot bets appear to be the best bets at this year’s Indy 500. The IndyCar betting odds currently have Sato at +2000 despite him having some of the fastest times at practice runs in Indianapolis. Sato won the 2017 and 2020 Indy 500s and is looking for his third victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sato at +2000 feels like a steal.
Simon Pagenaud is also another good longshot bet. Pagenaud is three years removed from his Indy 500 victory and is currently sitting at +2500. Although Pagenaud has only one top-five finish this season, he is a smart and efficient driver that controls his car well on this track.
The final Indy 500 betting pick is Will Power at +1200. Although he is not as much of a longshot as the others, the value on Power is high. Currently, Power sits in first place in the Indycar standings with 170 points. His driving ability is unquestionable, and he is yet to win a race this year. He may just be due for a big race in Indianapolis at the same race that he won back in 2018.
IndyCar Results and Matchups
So far, the IndyCar 2022 season has been spectacular. Championship leader Power has five top-five finishes, and second place Palou has three top-five finishes. Despite these results, neither driver has won a race yet this season.
Newgarden currently sits in fourth place in the standings but is the only driver to win more than one race this season. If he wins at the Indy 500, he’ll have won half of the races that have taken place in the 2022 season. Newgarden is currently +800 on the IndyCar betting odds.
Dixon, another +800 favorite according to the IndyCar betting lines, has had a great season as well and sits in fifth place in the standings. Dixon is looking to avenge himself after a disappointing Indy 500 last year in which his car was retired less than a ¼ of the way through the race.
