Milwaukee Bucks’ Performance Last Season

The Bucks had another successful regular season, finishing with a 58-24 regular-season record for the best record in the NBA. It marked the third time in five seasons Milwaukee achieved that feat, and it won the inaugural Maurice Podoloff Trophy for doing so.

Despite the best overall record and entering the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the East, the Bucks were upset in the first round of the playoffs by the eighth-seeded Miami Heat. Milwaukee lost to Miami in five games, becoming the sixth No. 1 seed to fall to an 8-seed in league history. The failure resulted in head coach Mike Budenholzer being fired after five seasons.

Milwaukee Bucks Key Additions

Though the Bucks’ offseason moves largely consisted of re-signing players such as Khris Middleton, Brook Lopezand Jae Crowder, they made an offseason-defining trade weeks ahead of preseason to become a title favorite once again.

The Bucks were part of a three-team trade that landed them star Damian Lillard from Portland to pair with Giannis Antetokounmpo. Lillard led the Trailblazers to the playoffs eight times, including a Western Conference finals appearance in 2018-19 and has been an All-Star seven times. He finished last season with a career-high 32.2 points and 7.3 assists.

Milwaukee also added some new players as well, signing both Robin Lopez and Malik Beasley to veteran minimum deals in the offseason. Lopez joins the Bucks for the second time after spending the 2019-20 season with them, and should play a backup center role after averaging three points and 1.4 rebounds last season.

Beasley should be a nice addition for Milwaukee around the arc as he is a career 37.8% 3-point shooter, averaging 5.8 shots from beyond the arc a game. Beasley finished last season with the Lakers, where he averaged 11.1 points and 3.3 rebounds a game.

Milwaukee Bucks Key Subtractions

To acquire Lillard, the Bucks had to give up both Jrue Holiday and Grayson Allen. Holiday was an integral part of Milwaukee’s championship title run, averaging 17.3 points and 8.7 assists a game, while he was one of the Bucks’ strongest defenders as well.

Allen, meanwhile, spent two seasons with the Bucks, where he averaged 10.4 points on 39.9% from the arc and 3.3 rebounds a game last season.

Milwaukee also lost a pair of strong 3-point shooters when it decided not to bring back Joe Ingles and Jevon Carter.

Though both played in backup positions, they each played key roles. Ingles’ 40.9% 3-point shooting made him a reliable shooter while Carter was also looked to in key moments. He averaged 42.1% from beyond the arc and added a solid defensive presence as well.

Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Analysis

After getting upset by the No. 8 seed in the playoffs, the Bucks fired head coach Mike Budenholder.

Milwaukee replaced him with Adrian Griffin, a first-time head coach who was last an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors. Griffin has been an NBA assistant for 15 years, beginning his coaching career with the Bucks in 2008, and he was part of the Toronto staff that led the team to an NBA title in 2019.

Milwaukee Bucks Prediction for the 2023-24 Season

With a new star to pair with Antetokounmpo in Lillard, the Bucks are one of the frontrunners to win the title, with NBA lines having them tied with Boston for the best odds to win. Although Milwaukee will be going through some change with a new, first-time coach, having two of the best players in the league in Antetokounmpo and Lillard should help the Bucks sustain some growing pains. The Bucks will once again get some tough competition in the East from Boston and Miami, but a return to the playoffs is a safe bet, with NBA odds having them tied for first to win the East as well.
