Clippers vs Mavericks: Matchup Overview Aug. 6

Although the L.A. Clippers (2nd) and Dallas Mavericks (7th) seemingly enter today’s matchup miles apart in the Western Conference standings, the statistics behind them are almost identical. It’s uncanny. The matchup has a lot to do with two MVP candidates, Clips SF Kawhi Leonard and Mavs PG Luca Doncic, slugging it out, but there’s a lot more to see in this overview.

Clippers vs Mavericks: Statistical Doppelgängers

A breakdown of each team’s statistics thus far in 2019-2020 reveals that the Clippers and Mavericks are only separated by a fraction of a point in several major offensive and defensive categories.  Dallas scores an average of .7 more points per game than Los Angeles, while L.A. allows 1.4 PPG less. Based on these numbers, one could imagine the Clippers winning this game by .7 points as a 30% deflated ball is dunked by Clips SG Paul George at the buzzer.

This feels like a great spot to invest a few bucks on a prop bet for the highest-scoring quarter, with the best pick being a tie, at +1500. These teams are practically identical twins. A $10 bet of this nature pays out a total of $150 if you hit!

The only two stats that might be considered to have a significant difference here are these: 1) The Clippers shoot a higher free throw percentage by 1.7%, and 2) The Mavericks allow a higher field goal percentage by 1.81%… Aside from that, these two teams couldn’t be more evenly matched in their upcoming Bubble battle.

Clippers vs. Mavericks: Head-to-Head This Season

The Clippers lead the season series 2-0 after winning two huge road games. On November 26th, Los Angeles marched into Dallas and dominated down low, outscoring the Mavericks 48-30 in the paint and outrebounding them 56-46. The Clippers won 114-99, snapping the Mavs 5-game win streak while extending their own to six games. “The Klaw” led all scorers with 28 points, with Paul George (26) and Lou Williams (21) right behind him. Doncic had 22 points for Dallas in the losing effort.

The matchup on January 21st was much closer, but the Mavericks still fell 110-107 in front of the home crowd, much to the chagrin of owner Mark Cuban. Luca Doncik was in the zone, dropping 36 points and narrowly missing a triple-double by one assist, but Kawhi Leonard rattled off 36 points of his own as the Clippers sniped the Mavs without Paul George in the lineup.

Clippers vs Mavericks: Key Injuries

The big news out of Los Angeles is that Clippers starting PG Patrick Beverley is out with a calf injury. C Montrezl Harrell still has not rejoined the team in Orlando after leaving the Bubble for a family emergency back in July.

The Mavericks will be without sharpshooter SG Seth Curry, who has a leg injury. Dallas will miss Curry’s 62.5% three-point shooting percentage vs. L.A.

Game Lines

The Clippers are currently favored by 4.5 points and the over/under is 228.5 total points.
