The Phoenix Suns and the Boston Celtics just played games that were pretty much finished at halftime. The Suns were down 20 to the Atlanta Hawks through two quarters, eventually losing 132-100 on Wednesday. On the other hand, the Celtics beat the Brooklyn Nets 139-96 on that same day, jumping out to a 31-point lead in the first quarter.
Friday’s matchup between the Suns and Celtics will feature the last two teams to lose in the NBA Finals.
Suns’ Uncharacteristic Night
Since a stretch that saw Phoenix lose nine of 10 games, the Suns have won six of their last eight. One loss was to the Dallas Mavericks in a close game, and the other was a blowout against the Hawks.
There were a lot of factors that led to the Suns losing to the Hawks. One was an out-of-character 16 turnovers, which led to 31 points. The Suns are middle of the pack in turnovers and transition defense, but against the Hawks, they performed well below that.
Those struggles were only made worse by Chris Paul’s poor shooting night. Since returning from an injury that kept him out seven games, Paul had been sold, averaging 21.6 points and 10.4 assists. But, against the Hawks, he had just three points on six shots with three assists.
All but one of the last eight games were played in Phoenix, which has helped it recapture its form. However, the Hawks game was before an East Coast trip, a troubling last home game. The bright spot is that Devin Booker is traveling with the team, hoping to make his return soon.
Celtics Statement Win
The Boston Celtics have the best record in the NBA, and if anyone had concerns due to their recent struggles, the Nets game probably answered most questions. The four games before facing the Nets had been tough, losing three and controversially beating the Los Angeles Lakers in overtime. However, just from the Celtics’ first quarter against Brooklyn, it is easy to say they have broken out of the slump.
Sure, the Nets were down some key players, but seven minutes in, the game seemed over, the Celtics having a 27-4 lead. The Celtics couldn’t miss, Jayson Tatum had 18 points, and Jaylen Brown added 12, combining for seven 3s 12 minutes in. They coasted after that and maintained their lead by keeping their defensive effort high.
At the start of the season, the Celtics looked like they were going to break all sorts of offensive records but have slowed. This game showed that few teams could go point-for-point with them when the Celtics are hot. They attempted 54 3s, making 26 and shooting 58% from the field.
The team is still without starting point guard Marcus Smart, who is dealing with an ankle injury. While he won’t improve the scoring, his playmaking has been great, averaging a career-high 7.2 assists.

Suns vs Celtics Picks and Prediction
Based on how the teams looked in their last game, it’s hard not to see the Celtics as a clear favorite, especially at home. They put on a shooting clinic against the Nets, while the Suns were hammered by the Hawks.
However, a team like the Suns may want to prove that the loss against the Hawks was a fluke, giving them motivation. However, that may not matter since the Celtics have a similar offense to the Hawks, and if the shooting touch remains, they could have another big offensive game.
