Pistons Still Growing As A Team
The Detroit Pistons are hoping to contend for a playoff spot, but they have to come together as a team and find some consistency. On Friday night, they faced another team trying to return to the postseason in the New York Knicks and were overwhelmed, losing by 24 points after falling behind by 20 points by halftime.
“Opening night for the other team, they were a hot team,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said after Friday’s loss. “I thought for stretches we played good basketball and other stretches they ambushed us.”
Forward Saddiq Bey scored a team-high 26 points and grab seven rebounds. Bey is averaging 17.0 points so far and is a key component to the Pistons’ hopes.
Guard Cade Cunningham filled up the boxscore with 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in Friday’s loss..
Pacers Show Fight In Likely Lost Season
The Indiana Pacers are one of the teams expected to be near the bottom of the standings as they may just work to earn a better spot in next year’s draft. Still, even without big men Myles Turner and Daniel Theis, the Pacers were right in it against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night, falling 137-134 after a furious comeback from a double-digit deficit in the final minutes.
The Pacers will need to show that kind of hustle against the Pistons, as they have a starting lineup that features three guards and no true center. Indiana’s defense allowed San Antonio to shoot 54.3% from the floor, including 54.8% from 3-point range.
Guard Tyrese Haliburton is expected to lead the Pacers, and he did just that Friday night, with team-high totals in points (27) and assists (12). Starting his third NBA season, Haliburton is averaging 26.5 points and 9.5 assists through two games, hitting 52.8% of his shots from the field.
Rookie guard Bennedict Mathurin – the No. 6 pick in this year’s draft –– has lived up to his draft status, averaging 22.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in his first two NBA games. He had 26 points in Friday’s loss and hit three 3-pointers for the second straight contest.

The Detroit Pistons have the look of a playoff contender and should be ready for a better performance after Friday’s ugly loss. The Indiana Pacers are shorthanded on the front line, which is going to hurt against the Pistons in this one. Look for an easy victory by the visitors
