Pacers Dealing With Long Western Swing
The Indiana Pacers have been one of the pleasant surprises of the 2022-23 season thus far, currently in the middle of a grueling seven-game road trip to the West Coast. Indiana has gone 1-2 thus far and still has games against Golden State, Portland, and Minnesota after Friday’s contest.
The young squad is led by guard Tyrese Haliburton, who tops the NBA in assists per game right now with 11.2. The 22-year-old also averages 19.3 points per game but is listed as questionable for Friday due to left groin soreness.
Rookie guard Bennedict Mathurin has been very good off the bench, ranking second on the Pacers in scoring at 19.2 points per game despite playing 28.0 minutes a night in a reserve role. Mathurin is shooting 40.3% from 3-point range, though he’s coming off an 0-for-4 night from beyond the arc in Wednesday’s loss to the Sacramento Kings.
Forward Jalen Smith has had a hot scoring hand on the road trip, though a bit inconsistent. Smith had 23 points in 29 minutes in a loss to the Clippers and 22 points in 19 minutes against the Kings, but he scored just nine points in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

Jazz Get Back on Winning Track
The Utah Jazz had been playing a bad tune, dropping five straight games since guard Mike Conley was lost to a leg injury. Conley still wasn’t in the lineup on Wednesday, but the Jazz got things right, getting an easy home win over the LA Clippers to snap their losing skid.
“We were playing to our style of basketball,” Utah forward Lauri Markkanen said after Wednesday’s win, which saw the Jazz shoot 55% from the floor. “We were getting good looks. It didn’t really matter who’s shooting as long as it goes in and we’re getting good looks.”
Markkanen had 23 points and nine rebounds in the victory. The 25-year-old has been the top scorer for Utah this season, averaging 22.2 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 39.5% from 3-point range.
Guard Jordan Clarkson has also been a top scorer for the Jazz, averaging 19.5 points as he’s moved into a starting role after years as a top reserve. Clarkson rebounded from an eight-point effort against the Chicago Bulls on Monday with a season-high 33 points in Wednesday’s win.
Guard Collin Sexton has moved into the starting lineup since Conley went down and has been putting up solid numbers, averaging 17.6 points and 7.2 assists over the last five games. Sexton can sometimes struggle with turnovers – he had six in Wednesday’s win – but he is a dynamic scorer when he gets going.

The Indiana Pacers have some solid young scorers, but the team’s defense has been a bit of a problem. That’s not a good sign against a Utah Jazz team that can hurt an opponent from multiple positions. Look for a high-scoring contest with the Jazz coming out on top.
