Playoff Race Heats Up in Western Conference
LA Favored in West Play-In Opener
There is a lot of respect for the Los Angeles Lakers with NBA lines. They opened as firm favorites against the Minnesota Timberwolves for the opening game of the NBA West Play-In Tournament.
Online gambling markets are giving the likes of LeBron James and Anthony Davis credit for the Lakers’ late-season push, but the Timberwolves have a team that could test the favorites on Tuesday night.

Timberwolves Close Strongly
The Minnesota Timberwolves won and covered the sportsbook spread in their last three games, including a 113-108 win against the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday.
They have hit top gear at the right time of the season, especially after posting a 151-131 offensive performance against the San Antonio Spurs last week.
If they can score at such a clip against the Lakers, covering the +7 spread won’t be too difficult, and they have the weapons to achieve their goal. Despite going only 42-40, they have the makings of a playoff team.
Anthony Edwards averages 24.6 points per game and he likes to pull the trigger. The Timberwolves will be without big man Rudy Gobert, who was suspended for Tuesday’s game after throwing a punch at a teammate in Sunday’s regular-season finale.
“Emotions got the best of me today. I should not have reacted the way i did regardless of what was said. I wanna apologize to the fans, the organization and particularly to Kyle (Anderson), who is someone that I truly love and respect as a teammate,” Gobert said.
NBA odds aren’t giving Minnesota enough respect, and despite playing on the road in a hostile environment, the Timberwolves are solid on the road and the Lakers aren’t fantastic at home.

Lakers With Nowhere to Hide
There is a case to be made that NBA betting lines have given the Los Angeles Lakers too much respect, simply because they found a way to make the playoffs.
Most of the run came with James sitting out, so credit goes to Davis and the bench. We didn’t like what we saw from James in a 125-118 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, but the team bounced back with a win over Phoenix.
We’re just not convinced this team is good enough to progress past the play-in phase of the NBA playoffs. They have been mostly poor for much of 2022 and 2023, so now we’re meant to give -7 points?
It’s tough to stomach, but there is always the potential for the Lakers to score a blowout win when it counts. We envision James going nuts and dropping 40 points, but that could be nostalgia kicking in.
There isn’t much of a tomorrow if the Lakers drop the opening game, and the pressure could be all too much.

Timberwolves vs Lakers Head-to-Head
The Lakers won the most recent meeting 123-111 in Minnesota to cover the -2 sport betting spread.
However, it was all the Wolves prior. They covered the spread in six consecutive games from March 2021 to March 2023.
They are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Los Angeles.

Timberwolves vs Lakers Game Summary
Lakers vs Timberwolves Previous Game (Mar 31, 2023)
The Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves are jockeying for playoff positions. Currently, they are eighth and seventh in the NBA standings, respectively. But only a half-game separates them, so the Lakers could overtake Minnesota with a win here. The NBA lines have this tightly lined with the home team, Minnesota, having won three straight versus the Lakers.
NBA news are not reporting any significant absences for either team here. Minnesota could miss Jaylen Nowell (knee) and Taurean Prince (illness) but will still have its best men. But despite the Wolves having more talented players, the Lakers are just a bit more in sync right now. Davis will finally get the better of Towns this Friday.
