Wizards Finally Get Support
The season has not been kind to the Wizards, who are struggling with injuries and are often mentioned in trade rumors. They have only won twice over the last 15 games but somehow are a game and a half outside of a play-in spot.
Bradley Beal returned Sunday after missing six games and brought life back into the team. They nearly ended the losing streak at nine against the Los Angeles Lakers but fell two points short behind Beal’s 29. Against the Suns, Kyle Kuzma led the team in scoring with 29 points and was tied for the most assists with Beal at six. Beal started the game slowly, with just two points in the first half, but ended with 27.
For most of the season, the Wizards have relied on their top three players, Beal, Kuzma, and Kristaps Porziņģis, to win. However, with Porziņģis out, the role players filled in. Deni Avdija added 16 points and led the team in rebounds with 10, while Daniel Gafford had 12 and nine in his first start of the season. The role players have been inconsistent but came up big to end the streak.
Jazz Offensive Efficiency
Somehow, without a clear-cut All-Star, the Jazz have had one of the best offenses in the NBA. They are fourth in points per game and offensive rating, putting them alongside some of the best teams. The team is also doing all the little things, being seventh in offensive rebounds and eighth in assists per game.
A massive part of the offense has been the success of Lauri Markkanen, who is having a career year, and might be the Jazz’s sole All-Star. He is playing well above his career averages, scoring 22.8 points and grabbing 8.2 rebounds per game. Against the Pistons, he tied his season-high in scoring with 38 points and hitting a career-best nine threes.
It is also helpful when you have three offensively skilled guards. Jordan Clarkson has thrived in a starting role, averaging 20.1 points, 2.7 threes, and 4.5 assists per game. Malik Beasley has also been a solid deep threat off the bench, making 3.3 three per game. On top of that, while Collin Sexton has been injured, he is another scoring threat off the bench, averaging 14.3 points per game.
