Southeast Rivalry With Playoff Implications

Last month, the Washington Wizards hosted the Atlanta Hawks for back-to-back games with a lot riding on that short series. The Hawks won both games, keeping their NBA playoff odds alive, while the Wizards were recently eliminated.

Both teams are playing the second game of a back-to-back on Wednesday. The Wizards lost 140-128 to the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Hawks beat the Chicago Bulls 123-105.

Wizards Calling It Early

The Wizards made NBA news on Sunday by officially being eliminated from the playoff after a loss to the New York Knicks. The team has featured less than exciting lineups, with the last time one of its big three played was Kristaps Porziņģis against the Boston Celtics on March 28.

Since then, the Wizards have played three games, losing to the Orlando Magic, Knicks, and Bucks. All three starting lineups featured players that had been riding the bench all season. Most notably, second-year player Corey Kispert, who scored 27 and 29 against the Magic and Knicks but struggled facing the Bucks. This makes taking the Wizards in NBA picks a lot more complicated, knowing they will not put out their best lineup.

It will be interesting to see how the Wizards handle these final three games. Against the Bucks, they gave rookie Johnny Davis, who has struggled, his second career start and looked good.

Hawks Must Finish in Top Half of Play-In

With the season nearing its end, it is pretty clear that the Hawks will find themselves fighting for a playoff spot. If they can’t secure the seventh or eighth seed for the Play-In, there is a very small chance they will make it to the playoffs.

If the Hawks were to fall to the ninth or 10th seed, they would have to win back-to-back games, which the team just did for the first time since March 8-10 –against the Wizards– beating the Dallas Mavericks in overtime, then blowing out the Bulls.

This places Atlanta in a difficult position because its defense has been underwhelming recently. The Hawks have the fourth-highest defensive rating since the All-Star break, balanced out by the third-best offensive rating. It has affected the team’s NBA lines, never really being favored by much, going 5-5 against the spread (ATS) over the last 10 games.

Wizards vs Hawks Betting Lines

Wizards vs Hawks Picks and Prediction

The Wizards’ season is over, and they are officially sidelining their star players. This means the Hawks should win this game, still playing for Play-In seeding. However, given the NBA point spread, it might be hard for the Hawks to cover.

Atlanta has struggled on defense all season but has been bailed out by a decent offense. This could lead to the game being much closer than expected, with the Hawks maybe not taking the Wizards seriously.

The Atlanta Hawks are listed at -575 in our NBA odds. This means that if you wager $100 on the Hawks, you have a chance to win $17. The Washington Wizards is +430, offering a chance to win $430 on a $100 wager.

The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives the Atlanta Hawks an 85.19% chance to win, with the Washington Wizards at 18.87%.
