Ben Simmons Is Out for Remainder of Season Due to Back Injury

The Brooklyn Nets Guard Will Explore Treatment Options for the Pinched Nerve in His Lower Back

Injury-Plagued Simmons

The Brooklyn Nets roster will not include point guard Ben Simmons going forward after it was announced that a nerve impingement in his lower back will preclude the 27-year-old from playing this season. The injury has been lingering throughout the year and Simmons will seek medical specialists to repair what has been described as a pinched nerve.

“Simmons, along with his representatives and Nets medical personnel, are currently in discussions with numerous experts to determine the course of action that will provide him with the best opportunity for long-term sustainable health,” the Nets said in a statement for NBA news outlets.

Although Simmons has not been a complete bust, his status as the first overall player taken in the 2016 NBA Draft by Philadelphia came with lofty expectations. His best season came during his second year with the Sixers in which he averaged 16.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

However, at the beginning of the 2022 campaign, a disgruntled Simmons demanded a trade and subsequently sat out citing mental health concerns. He was dealt to Brooklyn at the trade deadline for James Harden and could not play for the Nets that season due to a herniated disc.

Another Unfortunate Injury

After being installed as the starting guard to begin this year, Simmons was injured once more on November 6th in a four-point loss to the Bucs in which he scored just two points in 33 minutes. An MRI determined he had suffered a lower back injury and since that time he has played in just nine more games before this latest injury sidelined him for the season.

Just a few days ago interim Nets coach, Kevin Ollie, said, “He’s still day-to-day, he’s still on the court, and hopefully we can get him back soon and get him ready for this playoff push that we have in March and April.”

Ben Simmons’ season stats have been that of a role player, averaging 23.9 minutes in 15 games garnering 6.1 points, 8.9 boards, and 5.7 assists. The last game in which he played occurred on February 26th in a 111-86 defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies. He ended the evening with 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists over 14 minutes of play.

Simmons has one year left on a salary that will pay him a reported $40 million next season and it is rumored the Nets could attempt to trade him or buy out his last year. Whether Simmons plays again is unknown and only time will tell.
