The Miami Heat visit the Brooklyn Nets in the teams’ second preseason game.

The Heat reached the Eastern Conference finals last season, then lost to the Boston Celtics in seven. Also last season, Brooklyn was swept by that same Celtics team, that after entering the season was one of the choices to win the championship.

Brooklyn is tied with the third-best NBA title odds at +650, while Miami is listed at +1800.

Heat Get Over Hump?

The Miami Heat nearly advanced to their second Finals in three seasons this past postseason, but they just couldn’t get past Boston. Miami will be looking to capitalize on another season with Jimmy Butler, the 14th choice in the NBA MVP lines (+5000) at BetUS sportsbook.

The team around him is built with several quality players on the roster, which gives coach Erik Spoelstra plenty of options.

Kevin Durant decided to rescind his trade request after an offseason filled with drama. He’s listed at +1000 in odds to win MVP honors this season.

Durant’s still arguably the best player in the league, with an ability to easily score while taking over during crunch time of games. He ended 2021-22 averaging just under 30 points in 55 games, so it’s not a sufficient sample size to rank among the leaders.

Brooklyn still runs through him, starring while playing within the confines of the team is not an easy thing to do.

Kyrie Irving opted back into the fold after a season (and offseason) filled with uncertainty, Brooklyn refusing to give him a new pact.

Irving did appear in just 29 games a season ago, averaging 27.4 ppg. As with Dutant, that figure would’ve easily ranked Irving among the league leaders in scoring, had he played in a requisite number of games.

Now, Ben Simmons, acquired in the trade that sent James Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers, is another legit playmaker and defensive presence this team has sorely needed. Whether he’s fully recovered after back surgery remains to be seen.
