Luka’s Mavs Among Favorites in 2024-25 NBA Championship Odds

There are plenty of reasons to think the Dallas Mavericks will once again be among the top contenders next season after losing to the Boston Celtics in five games in the NBA Finals. Yet, the Mavs find themselves fifth in the NBA odds to win the 2024-25 title at +950.

The Celtics are once again the favorites to repeat at +300 with the Denver Nuggets as the top Western Conference squad listed at +800. How can the Mavs improve their chances to return to the NBA Finals?

Let’s dive into the Mavericks’ offseason.

Can the Mavericks Re-Sign Derrick Jones Jr.?

Overall, there is much to be excited about when it comes to the Mavs future, especially considering the squad widely overachieved as a No. 5 seed. The good news is Dallas returns the majority of its core with the exception of starting forward Derrick Jones Jr.

With no cap room, the Mavs could find it challenging to re-sign Jones. If Dallas lets Jones walk, the Mavericks will still not have cap room to find a suitable replacement.

Dallas also will be without a first-round draft pick in the 2024 NBA draft.

Luka Doncic Heading Toward a $346 Million Supermax Deal

The good news for the Mavericks is that anytime you have Luka Doncic, your team is automatically a title contender. Now for the bad news – inflation is a real thing.

For most of us, that means paying a bit more for our Chipotle burrito bowl. Yet, for the Mavericks, it means Doncic is about to get the bag with a new contract extension for the coming years,

Before economists start flooding my mentions, this really is not a product of inflation, but new NBA television deals that will allow superstars to potentially start hitting the $300 to $400 million range in the coming years.

ESPN projects that Doncic will be eligible for a supermax contract extension worth five years, $346 million during the 2024-25 offseason. All this means Dallas is going to need to be even more crafty in the coming years when it comes to building a contending roster around Doncic.

We finally saw the Kyrie Irving of old and his presence gives the Mavs one of the best duos in The Association. Irving is under contract through the 2025-26 season, yet the superstar can exercise his player option in 2025 to become a free agent.

Mavs May Have Already Made All Their Roster Moves

Mavs fans should not expect any major roster moves this offseason. A major reason why Dallas made the NBA Finals was a result of the team’s deals at the trade deadline.

The Mavericks acquired a pair of big men in Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington at the NBA trade deadline. It is a key reason why Dallas was able to outperform its No. 5 seeding to reach the Finals.

If there is a remaining move to make, it could be the Mavs trading Tim Hardaway Jr., whose role has been limited in recent months. Yet, it is hard to imagine Hardaway has a significant trade market given his sizable contract. Maxi Kleber could be another player that could be used as a trade chip.

Regardless, the Mavs hopes will largely continue to center around Doncic and Irving being in good health when the 2024-25 NBA playoffs roll around. The Dallas front office will have to entice veterans to play for less in hopes of chasing a title.

The Mavs still have some work to do to catch the Celtics in the NBA betting odds, but the Doncic-Irving combo gives them hope for 2025.
