If the usual NBA predictions on the Finals, Conference champions, award winners, or team win totals become too repetitive, check out some of the specials. There are a lot of specials that are unorthodox or very specific, so here are three options to consider betting on.

3 NBA Specials Worth a Bet in 2024-25

1. Best Record at NBA All-Star Break

It is no secret that the Boston Celtics were the best team in the NBA last season and will likely be again in 2024-25. Not only did the Celtics win the NBA Finals last season, but they also had the best record in the league, at 64-18. Their NBA Championship odds are set at +315, the lowest in the league.

Because of that, betting on the Celtics to have the best record at the All-Star break is a solid NBA pick. They had the best record at the All-Star break last season, 42-12, and there is a good chance they will do that again. It is hard to back a team from the West because it is a more difficult conference. Then, in the East, while there will be some challenges for the Celtics to deal with, the top two options, the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers, have an entirely new roster.

That lies the secret to the Celtics‘ having the best record by the All-Star break. Unlike the other top teams in the East, they don’t have to deal with building comradery. The team’s only roster move was replacing Svi Mykhailiuk with Lonny Walker IV in free agency, which is probably an upgrade.

The rest of this championship lineup is still intact. Jayson Tatum and Derrick White signed long-term extensions during the offseason. Jaylen Brown is coming off winning a Finals MVP. Finally, Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday, the additions that put the Celtics over the top in the 2023 offseason, are still on the team. This is still one of the best starting lineups in the league and will only get better at the start of this season.

2. First Head Coach Fired

It is always hard to call for someone’s job, but it seems like Willie Green has a good chance of being the first head coach fired this season, making NBA news. The biggest reason for that is that all signs point to the New Orleans Pelicans having a chaotic season, falling well below expectations, and if that happens, head coaches are always blamed.

Before the start of the season, the Pelicans made a trade for Dejounte Murray, which should solve some crucial roster issues. The Pelicans desperately needed a point guard, and Murray is a perfect fit, being a great passer and defender.

However, while the trade covered up those gaps on the roster, it created others. Murray is in the first season of a four-year deal worth $114 million. Zion Williamson has $163 million left guaranteed, and CJ McCollum has another $63 million. That has put the Pelicans in a cap space issue, where Brandon Ingram and Trey Murphy III, who were second and fourth in points per game last season, are looking for new deals. With both of them not getting new deals this offseason, that has become a looming cloud over the team.

In addition, the Pelicans are starting the season without a starting center. Herbert Jones, 6 feet 8 inches tall, is the only option unless Williamson (6 feet 6 inches) steps into that role. Both are not sustainable options for a whole season. The Pelicans won 49 games last season, and they may not get close to that this season. Given that the team has improved every year under Green, it might be a surprise to see him get fired, but the Pelicans will struggle, making him the fall guy.

3. Most Head-to-Head Wins

In the 2021 NBA Finals, the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Phoenix Suns in six games. The Suns took an opening two-game lead but lost the next four, as Giannis Antetokounmpo won his first championship.

However, both teams look different in the 2024-25 season. While the core of the Bucks is still the same, led by Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, and Brook Lopez, their one significant addition is Damian Lillard. The Bucks made the blockbuster trade for him last season, but that did not exactly lead to success in 2023-24. They struggled, firing head coach Adrian Griffin, who was hired at the start of the season and had a 30-13 record. Griffin was replaced by Doc Rivers, who had a 17-19 record in the regular season, as the Bucks lost in six games in the first round of the playoffs.

Devin Booker is the only surviving player on the Suns roster from the 2021 NBA Finals. He has also had two head coaches since then, with the Suns hiring Mike Budenholzer this season. Furthermore, the star talent around Booker has gotten better. The Suns traded for Kevin Durant at the 2022-23 trade deadline and acquired Bradley Beal last offseason.

While both teams have had their ups and downs after the 2021 NBA Finals, the Suns are trending upwards. They had solid offseasons, building depth in much-needed positions, while the Bucks did nothing. We all saw what the Bucks looked like last season late in the season, which was not good, and 2024-25 could be more of that.

Even though the Suns are in the more challenging conference, the Bucks will have more competition at the top of the East, especially in their division. That might make the NBA odds on the Suns having a better record than the Bucks an interesting betting option for specials.
