NBA Trade Deadline Aftermath: Knicks, Mavs Winners

The 2024 NBA Trade Deadline passed. And while we did not get any “Woj Bombs!” there were enough significant moves to shake up the outright odds to win the NBA title. In the forefront are the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks, the busier contenders on Thursday. Both bolstered their rosters and shortened their lines. But who else made moves and how did they impact the odds?

Here’s a look at some NBA games odds to consider!

Biggest NBA Trade Deadline Moves

New York, New Hope?

The Knicks were the hottest team in the NBA before the injury bug bit. The likes of OG Anunoby and Julius Randle are sidelined for some time. But the team did not want to lose momentum so it made a big deal at the deadline, acquiring guards Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks from Detroit.

The duo, who combines for 32.8 points with 5.4 3-pointers per game, brings much-needed firepower to the Knicks. New York’s NBA Finals odds shortened from +1100 to +700 to make it and from 35-1 to 20-1 to win it.

For the first time in a long time, the Knicks have decent NBA odds to win the title. At the least, the Knicks are expected to make a deep playoff run. They can build on their second-round appearance last season as they look to make a run for a top-two seed with teams like Milwaukee and Philadelphia hurting.

Dallas Backs Luka Doncic

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd made a heartfelt plea for Nico Harrison and the Mavericks executives to continue to build around superstar Luka Doncic. And they delivered as they acquired forward P.J. Washington from Charlotte and center Daniel Gafford from Washington.

The Mavericks had to part with Grant Williams, a significant free-agent signing, but Washington has a higher offensive upside. The former Hornet is a floor spacer and averages nearly two 3-pointers per game in his career. He also chips in 13 points and 5.5 rebounds. Gafford, on the other hand, is having a career season with averages of 10.9 points, eight boards, and 2.2 blocks.

Washington and Gafford should beef up Dallas’ middle and will help alleviate the team’s woes in rebounding and secondary scoring. Dallas’s online sports betting odds shortened sightly going from 45-1 to win the title to 40-1 today.

More Contenders Make Moves

New York and Dallas were not the only contenders busy on Thursday. The injury-plagued Philadelphia 76ers shipped guard Patrick Beverley and four other players while acquiring shooting guard Buddy Hield from Indiana. The series of deals put Philadelphia under the luxury tax and gave it a much-needed scorer with MVP Joel Embiid, and others sidelined.

With the move, NBA experts now expect Philadelphia to be busy in the buyout market. Notable guards like Kyle Lowry, a Philadelphia native, and Spencer Dinwiddie could be on their radar. However, the Sixers’ injuries put them in a tough spot, hence why the sportsbook lengthened Philadelphia from 12-1 to win the NBA title to 20-1.

Boston and Milwaukee, the top teams in the East, made incremental deals. The Celtics acquired forward Xavier Tillman before deadline day while Milwaukee traded for Beverley from Philadelphia. They remain favored NBA picks to win the title.

Oklahoma City, an incipient title threat, also acquired former All-Star Gordon Hayward from Charlotte, who joined Toronto as two of the biggest deadline dealers.
