NBA Wednesday was dominated by the road teams, who went 7-3-1.
Kicking off the action were the Atlanta Hawks vs Orlando Magic, with the Hawks winning 130-109. They got out to a big halftime lead and never looked back in covering the -5½ betting online spread. The over 227½ easily cashed as Bogdan Bogdanovic had a healthy 23 points.
The golden run of the Boston Celtics came to an end against the Detroit Pistons, of all teams. The 112-111 loss came despite Jaylen Brown dropping 31 points, but an injury to Marcus Smart played a part. Detroit scored just its 13th win, so it was a much-needed boost as the +12½-point underdogs.
Winning hasn’t come easy for the Indiana Pacers, who secured a gutsy 113-108 win over the Washington Wizards. It was enough for the over to cash, but it was an exciting finish as the Wizards tried to close the gap late.
The sportsbook had the Brooklyn Nets as +4½ underdogs, but banking on the New York Knicks to win isn’t easy. Despite holding a 28-point lead, the Knicks choked and suffered a truly shocking loss in front of home fans. The Nets came roaring back on the heroics of Cam Thomas, who went nuts in the fourth quarter.
There was solid money for the Chicago Bulls at -6 and they scraped by to beat the Sacramento Kings 125-118. It was only a two-point game heading into the final 12 minutes, but the 35-30 fourth was enough to see the Bulls continue their momentum. DeMar DeRozan dropped 38 points in the winning effort and he continues to lead Chicago.
Despite 44 points from Ja Morant, the Memphis Grizzlies suffered a rare 123-119 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. Jusuf Nurkic was big for the visitors with 32 points, which made the difference. It was just their ninth road win and it came as a +12½-point dog.
The in-form Minnesota Timberwolves scored just 17 points in the fourth quarter in losing 103-91 to the Toronto Raptors . It was a pick’em with NBA betting odds markets, so the Raptors covered the spread easily. The under 228 cashed by 34 points.
Another triple-double from Josh Giddey wasn’t enough to see the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs got out to a 15-point halftime lead and never looked back. It was a push for spread bettors and the over hit on the last bucket of the game.
The Phoenix Suns continue to win, but that hasn’t translated into covering spreads. They defeated the Houston Rockets 124-121, but it came as the -17 favorite. A big final quarter, which is synonymous with the Suns, saved them from losing outright. They’ll take the victory, but favorite bettors weren’t happy.
A thriller took place as the Golden State Warriors couldn’t hold onto their lead against the Denver Nuggets. Monte Morris nailed the game-winner as the road team celebrated as +5 underdogs. It was only the Warriors’ 17th loss, but not closing out the game is a worry. Nikola Jokic had a big game and it was his assist that helped secure Denver’s win.
“He’s the reigning MVP. He was down there scoring at will in the fourth quarter at the rim,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “Our defense was much, much better, Jokic just took over the game.”
In the final game of the day, the Los Angeles Lakers had a big fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Utah Jazz 106-101. LeBron James had 33 points in the winning effort for the Lakers, who were the +4 home underdogs.
