Return of Playoff D’Angelo Russell Sinks Lakers’ Chances

After Losing Game 1 vs the Nuggets, Can the Lakers Get Back on Track on Monday for Game 2?

Playoff DLo Sucks

For a moment, it looked like the Los Angeles Lakers may be able to pull off the Game 1 upset against the Denver Nuggets. The team even had a 12-point lead in the second quarter and entered the second half up three points. However, the Lakers got destroyed in the third quarter and couldn’t recover.

Anthony Davis and LeBron James were awesome and combined for 59 points. What really sank the Lakers’ chances of winning was D’Angelo Russell. D’Angelo Russell’s stats have been great in NBA games this season as he hit 41.5% of his threes. He was the subject of NBA rumors for most of the season but once the trade deadline passed, he was awesome.

That wasn’t the case in Game 1. He only scored 13 games and went 1-for-9 from three. He was mostly ineffective. If Russell is going to be this bad, the Lakers have no chance against Denver.

D’Angelo Russell’s Playoff Struggles

D’Angelo Russell was very bad against the Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals last year, which played a big role in why the Lakers got swept. While Russell faltered in Game 1, he believes that he’ll be fine.

“I mean, I can’t be mad,” Russell said. “I don’t recall the last time I got 20 shots. So for me to get 20 good looks – not 20 ‘good,’ probably five or six of them were questionable. I know what I’m capable of. So honestly, I’m excited. I’m excited about that.”

Where players like Jimmy Butler and Jamal Murray are known for how much better they get in the playoffs, Russell is known for the opposite. If his playoff struggles continue, there will likely be NBA news about him getting traded this offseason.
