Tatum + Brown: Magic Duo Makes Celtics Betting Favorites in 2025

It should come as no surprise that the opening NBA odds for the 2024-25 championship have the Boston Celtics atop the list at +300. The Denver Nuggets are a distant second at +800.

We all have recency bias, but the sportsbooks do their best to take emotion out of setting the odds. Why are the Celtics viewed as a heavy favorite in the sportsbook to become back-to-back NBA champions?

Here’s a look at why Boston has staying power as an NBA contender.

NBA Odds: Why Celtics Are Favorites to Win in 2025?

Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown Make Celtics Instant Title Contenders

The obvious answer for the Celtics repeating starts with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were being crowned as the NBA’s best duo during the Western Conference Finals. Yet, Tatum and Brown thoroughly outplayed the Mavericks stars during the NBA Finals.

All this comes with a cost as the Celtics could have about $600 million of guaranteed money committed to Tatum and Brown after this offseason. Tatum is expected to sign a contract extension which tops out at about $315 million for the life of the contract.

Despite my fellow media members doing their best to stir up drama, there is no sign of tension between the Celtics stars. This trend is sure to continue all offseason, but the Boston front office is hoping the duo stays away from the headlines throughout the offseason. Brown admitted the NBA Finals MVP award could have easily gone to Tatum.

“It could have gone to Jayson,” Brown said, per the Associated Press. “Jayson, I can’t talk enough about his selflessness. I can’t talk enough about his attitude.

“It’s just how he approached not just this series or the Finals but just the playoffs in general. And we did it together as a team, and that was the most important thing.”

Kristaps Porzingis Trade Worked Out for Boston

Boston is going to find it challenging to make significant moves this offseason. The Celtics already made their major moves last offseason by trading for both Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis.

So, the bad news is Boston is unlikely to be able to make a big splash this offseason. The good news is these trades worked out in a major way.

Both Holiday and Porzingis are under contract with the Celtics for the foreseeable future. The Celtics looked like far and away the best team all of this past season.

Should Celtics Fans Expect Similar Roster in 2024-25?

This is one of the rare instances when Boston can make minimal changes and attempt to run things back with a similar roster. The NBA betting odds indicate that Vegas is expecting similar results as well. Celtics head coach Joe Muzzulla is banking on the team continuing their selflessness as defending champions.

“They just made a decision that winning was the most important thing,” Mazzulla noted, per The Athletic. “Jayson and Jaylen playing defense. Derrick (White) and Jrue doing everything.

“Al, KP, who’s starting, who’s not starting, just none of that matters. And they just put winning at the forefront. And they put whatever went into winning at the forefront.”
