Teams That Should Trade for 2-Time NBA Champion Kevin Durant

The Two-Time Finals MVP Delivered a Historic Statistical Year With the Suns but Didn’t Make the Playoffs

What’s Next for KD? 🌟

After the Phoenix Suns finished 36-46 and failed to even qualify for the NBA’s play-in tournament this season, the NBA rumors suggest Kevin Durant could be on the move again in the offseason.

Durant, who turns 37 in September, still showed he can be an effective scorer after averaging 26.6 points per game in Phoenix in the 2024-25 season. Even when the only Kevin Durant stats people want to talk about these days are how many games he missed with injuries, he still managed 62 appearances before ending the year early with an ankle injury. The Suns finished 1-6 without him to close their disappointing year.

But Durant had the third-highest eFG% (.598) of his career this season thanks to shooting 43% from beyond the arc. Who wouldn’t want to add a quiet leader and legendary player like that to their team next year to set themselves up better for the NBA playoffs?

We know Durant, who hasn’t been to the NBA Finals since 2019, has plenty left in the tank, but here are the three teams that should consider making big NBA news this summer by trading for the 2-time NBA champion.

NBA Trade Rumors Never Disappoint

Houston Rockets

The Rockets have some good young pieces and are in a 1-1 series with the Warriors right now. But if you were making your NBA picks and predictions for the NBA Finals, you couldn’t rank Houston any higher than No. 7 to come out of the Western Conference despite their No. 2 seed.

They just lack a threatening offense as their leading scorer (Jalen Green) is too inconsistent. The forwards could also stand to get much better in Houston. Adding Durant would give them a reliable scorer, better 3-point shooting (ranked 21st this year), and we know that’s a style coach Ime Udoka would prefer to play based on his Boston success.

Miami Heat

Durant reportedly doesn’t want a Golden State reunion, and Jimmy Butler’s trade from Miami to the Warriors is another reason it shouldn’t happen. But Durant could always be the next to take his talents to South Beach and join Pat Riley’s Heat to play with Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo.

He’d be back in the Eastern Conference, which isn’t as deep as the Western Conference, and he’d have one of the best coaches in his career in Erik Spoelstra. There’s a void there without Butler that Durant could fill for the team.

San Antonio Spurs

You hate to bring up the term “Big 3” after Durant’s been part of some failed experiments since he left Golden State, where players just couldn’t stay healthy in Brooklyn (James Harden and Kyrie Irving) or Phoenix (Devin Booker and Bradley Beal).

But don’t you think the core of Durant, center Victor Wembanyama, and guard De’Aaron Fox would make for a playoff team next year? They complement each other well. Granted, there are concerns with the future of coach Gregg Popovich after more health issues, and Wemby is also dealing with blood clots that shut his second season down.

If healthy, that’s an attractive landing spot for a coach like Michael Malone, who was unceremoniously fired by Denver. Two Slim Reapers like Durant and Wemby pulling up from deep with a fourth-quarter scorer/closer like Fox sounds like good viewing to me.
