The Golden State Warriors proved bookmakers wrong en route to winning the NBA championship, but the same mistake isn’t been made for the 2022-23 season.
Despite being series favorites for the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, the Warriors were +1200 to win the NBA championship in preseason markets.
Savvy bettors were quick to snap up the NBA odds but the Warriors have been respected this time around.
Back-to-Back Titles for Warriors?
Winning back-to-back titles isn’t as hard as you would think in the NBA. It’s not like the NFL, so the Golden State Warriors have every chance of winning again.
Many players in the current team have already won consecutive championships in 2017 and 2018, so it’s nothing new to the likes of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.
In favor of a repeat performance are the younger players on Golden State’s roster. Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins have plenty of scope to become even better, so the future is bright in the Bay area.
It’s also good to see Thompson’s thoughts on staying in San Francisco.
“Man, I did tell (head coach) Steve Kerr at the NBA TV podium, I told him ,’You know, I’m going full Michael Jordan.’ I’m aligning myself with Steve (Kerr), I ain’t playing for anybody else but Steve,” reported Heavy.com.
The sportsbook opened with the Warriors at +450 to win, which is shorter than expected. It’s much shorter than the +1200 offered last season, but it comes as no surprise. The Warriors have their swagger back and that’s dangerous for their opposition.
With four championships in the last eight seasons, the Warriors have already created a dynasty and it could continue.
Celtics Get Second Chance
It’s always tough to know how teams will rebound from losing in the NBA Finals, but we’re confident the Boston Celtics will return to the big dance.
The team is too talented to not take full advantage. They are more enterprising than the likes of the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks, so there is no reason why they can’t return to the Finals and get the better of the best Western Conference team next season.
We also don’t expect Jayson Tatum to go missing again. He had an incredible regular season but went largely missing throughout the playoffs due to, we suspect, playing with an injured shoulder.
The Celtics are the best-favored team out of the Eastern Conference. They’re paying +600 to win the title, with the Nets hot on their heels at +650 and the Bucks at +700.
The Clippers? Really?
Despite missing the playoffs last season, the Los Angeles Clippers have been met with respect in betting online markets.
They are currently paying +650 to win the NBA championship and those odds are far too short. Injuries played their part with Kawhi Leonard missing the entire season and Paul George playing only 31 games, but it doesn’t seem to matter for the Clippers.
They find ways to disappoint their fans and bettors alike, so we don’t quite understand the significant betting support.
We like the roster, especially with Terance Mann running the point for the second unit. However, it doesn’t take much to derail a Clippers season and there will no doubt be excuses made at some point.
There are rumors that Kyrie Irving or Bradley Beal could be joining the roster, which explains the odds somewhat. However, Irving wasn’t the recipe for success in Boston or Brooklyn, so we’re not fussed.
