Wemby’s Historic Rookie Season

Victor Wembanyama Is the Favorite to Win NBA Rookie of the Year

Best Rookie Ever?

Everybody knew Victor Wembanyama would be great at some point but not many would have predicted how good he’d be as a rookie. He played in 71 games and Victor Wembanyama’s stats were unprecedented. He averaged 21.3 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.6 blocks per game as a rookie. Those kinds of stats have only been replicated by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the history of the NBA.

And Wemby was only a rookie. He’s a shoo-in to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award and he’ll likely be winning many more NBA awards over his career. One of the biggest concerns about Wemby was whether or not his slender frame could withstand an 82-game season. This is the skinniest he’ll ever be and he only missed 11 games.

Wemby is the only player in NBA history with 1,500+ PTS, 250+ BLK, and 100+ 3PT in a single season. Not the only rookie, the only player. He’s already an All-NBA defender and once he gets more consistent on offense, he may end up being the best player in the entire league.

What’s Next for Wemby?

As a rookie, Wemby showed that he could handle the pressure that comes with being an international superstar at 19. He was a prominent part of the NBA news cycle consistently and handled himself well. However, NBA greatness isn’t always measured in just stats.

The next step is to get the San Antonio Spurs into the NBA playoffs. The Spurs finished with the second-worst record in the Western Conference and only won 22 games. Wemby led the team in blocks, rebounds, steals, and blocks while not getting much help.

San Antonio is devoid of talent and that’s not going to change overnight. That said, LeBron James had the Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs by his third season. Wemby is chasing greatness so he’ll need to start winning more games soon.

The Spurs should be a more appealing destination for free agents now that it’s clear Wemby is the real deal. Plus, they still have Gregg Popovich, who is one of the most iconic coaches in NBA history. By next season, Wemby should be an All-Star and have the Spurs much more competitive.
