Holmgren is the primary reason that the Thunder have unlike the Bulls above a phenomenal interior defense that leads the league in blocked shots per game (7.2). Without him, the Clippers will have a bit more freedom to attack the rim on Monday.

That primarily impacts James Harden, who enters Monday ranked seventh in the NBA in drives and is tied for fourth in assists on drives. Many of those go to Ivica Zubac, who is averaging a career-high 16.4 points per game and ranks ninth in the NBA in dunks.

The Thunder have several other great defensive players but nearly half their blocked shots have come from Holmgren. After missing all of 2022-23 with injury, he has played every game for Oklahoma City, 101 straight including the playoffs. Jordan Poole is much more comfortable in his second season in Washington. He’s hitting at a 45.6% clip from the arc and has six 20-point games to his credit.

Poole and his crew will be playing the second half of a back-to-back on Monday at Houston, with both games coming against stout defenses. Orlando stifled the Wizards on Sunday in a 121-94 rout and the Rockets present a similar challenge.

Houston ranks fourth in opponents scoring (107.9) and they lead the league in a particular category that we’re going to target as it relates to Poole. The Rockets, with their slow pace and exceptional transition defense, give up the fewest assists per game (22.1). Poole had just one at Orlando and one in the previous game at Memphis.
