Game 3 Outlook: Mavericks to Win, Clippers to Cover

After the Dallas Mavericks stole a game on the road against the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 2 of their first-round series, Dallas will look to keep the momentum going when the two clash for Game 3 on Friday. The Mavericks and Clippers play the next two in Dallas, where the Mavs closed out the regular season by winning four of its last five games at home. The Mavericks will now try to keep the good times rolling on home court, and while they should take the lead in the series, the Clippers should be able to keep it close enough to cover the +4 spread from NBA lines.

Luka/Kyrie Duo Fuels Mavs

Luka Doncic is one of the finalists for league MVP, but Kyrie Irving has been crucial in the Mavericks’ success as well.

The two have led Dallas all season, with Doncic posting team highs of 32.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists and a game and Irving following with 27.0 points and 6.5 rebounds. They have taken over in the playoffs as well. The pair were just about the only two producing for the Mavericks in Game 1 against LA, combining for 64 of their 97 points, while they led Dallas to the win in Game 2.

Doncic finished with 32 points while Irving had a strong night from beyond the arc, going 4-of-8 to score 23 points for Dallas. With the duo heating up and both playing well at home, they should have another strong game to help the Mavs take Game 3.

Clippers Rely on Stifling Defense

Despite the strong play from Doncic and Irving, the Clippers have been doing all they can to hold back the Mavericks with their defense.

Los Angeles had the 10th-best defense in the NBA in the regular season, limiting teams to 112.3 points a game, and it has stepped up so far in the playoffs as well. The Clippers have held the Mavericks, a team that averaged 117.9 points a game in the regular season, under 100 points in each of their first two games of the postseason. Dallas has had a hard time scoring, shooting it at a 40.5% clip over two games. Outside of Doncic and Irving, it hasn’t been able to get much scoring, with PJ Washington the only other player to reach double figures in both games.

Back Clippers ATS as Series Heads to Dallas

With the Mavericks taking one on the road against the Clippers, they should be fueled by momentum as they return home to play a pair of games in the series.

However, the Clippers, with their big three and strong defense, are still not to be overlooked. Los Angeles has made it difficult for the Mavs offensively, and things shouldn’t be much different when they move to Dallas, where the Clippers were able to take a game in the regular season. Still, with Doncic and Irving leading the way and a home crowd, the Mavs should be able to get it done in Dallas, but LA should be able to make it closer than NBA spreads suggest.

Prediction: Clippers (+4) to cover the spread
