Hawks Working to Get into Postseason

The surprising run of the Atlanta Hawks to the Eastern Conference finals a season year ago seemed to foreshadow another solid playoff team this season. But Atlanta enters Monday’s game at .500 and is still not assured of a spot in the playoff field in the East. The Hawks have won 15 of their last 18 at home but are just 13-23 on the road.

“There’s still time for us to get that rhythm, get that mojo back, and a game like this – coming out with that focus and playing with that attitude that’s necessary – we can certainly get that going,” Atlanta coach Nate McMillan said after Friday’s win over the Golden State Warriors.

When guard Trae Young has his mojo going, he can be one of the hardest players in the league to stop. The 23-year-old is fourth in the league in scoring at 28.2 points per game and third in the NBA with 9.5 assists per contest. He’s been on his game against the Pacers this season, averaging 38.0 points and 8.7 rebounds in the previous three meetings.

Injuries have taken some of the Hawks’ depth away, as forward John Collins has been out since March 11 with finger and foot injuries. Guard Bogdan Bogdanovic (14.7 points) is listed as questionable for Monday’s game due to a knee injury that forced him to miss the win over Golden State.

Pacers Building for Next Season

The Indiana Pacers have been going through a lot of personnel changes this season, so coach Rick Carlisle will be using the stretch run to see what he has for next season. Injuries have also hurt the Pacers, with leading scorer Malcolm Brogdon (19.1 points, 5.9 assists) ruled out for this contest.

Guard Buddy Hield has been a top scorer for Indiana since coming over from the Sacramento Kings in a midseason trade. Hield is scoring 18.1 points per game and hitting nearly three 3-pointers a contest since coming to the Pacers.

Another part of the Kings-Pacers deal was guard Tyrese Haliburton, who will be counted on to run the team with Brogdon out. Haliburton is averaging 16.2 points and 9.5 assists in 19 contests with Indiana, showing the form that made many believe the Pacers got the better end of the swap with Sacramento.

Hawks vs Pacers Head-to-Head

The Atlanta Hawks have dominated the season series in 2021-22, winning all three of the previous meetings from the Indiana Pacers. Atlanta has topped 130 points in the last two matchups, including a three-point win at home on March 13.

Indiana had previously dominated the series between the two teams, winning seven straight from 2017-18 to 2019-20, but Atlanta has taken five of the last seven. The Hawks have a lot more to play for, which is why the NBA lines are so much in their favor.
