One of the NBA’s surprise successes last season was the creation of the in-season tournament. The league has brought it back for the 2024-25 season, with the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers playing their first game of the tournament in this matchup.

The Knicks have not gotten off to the start that many may have expected from them in NBA futures betting after an offseason filled with roster decisions. In the last game, they lost to the Indiana Pacers 132-121, as their defense struggled to defend the three-point line.

The 76ers ended their five-game losing streak by beating the Charlotte Hornets 107-106 in overtime. But the bigger NBA news is that center Joel Embiid should be back on the court, having missed the first nine games with an injury and suspension.

Knicks vs 76ers Betting Preview

76ers Getting Healthy Leaning Betting To Knicks

This matchup could significantly impact NBA predictions for the future. The 76ers have been dealing with injuries all season, most notably to Embiid, who has yet to step on the court. In the Knicks’ loss to the Pacers, they pretty much only played starters for the whole game.

Right before Embiid returned, the 76ers picked up a win to end their losing streak just in time. However, the team is still without Tyrese Maxey, who was averaging 27.6 points before suffering an injury. Plus, while Paul George has played in the last four games, he has not looked like himself, averaging 14.3 points.

The 76ers beat the Hornets because the role players had big games. Two players off the bench, Jared McCain and Guerschon Yabusele, scored career highs. McCain, a rookie, had 27 points, 23 of which came in the second half and overtime. Yabusele added 20 points and eight rebounds.

However, with Embiid on the court, that might seem like an upgrade, but it might take some time for him to be fully back in a rhythm. Injuries and a three-game suspension have kept Embiid off the court, which could lean the matchup in favor of New York. The Knicks are a much tougher opponent, which should help them win and cover the NBA spread.

Best Bet: Knicks -3

Lack of Depth Hurting Knicks

The Knicks are in a weird position going into this game. They have run into some issues after being very active in the offseason, trading for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns. The Knicks do not have the depth that made them so successful last season, which was a reason for their loss to the Pacers.

New York’s bench played 40 minutes in the loss to the Pacers. Miles McBride played most of that, at 29 minutes, while Jericho Sims and Tyler Kolek combined for the rest. The Knicks will play their starters into the ground, which has been a concern raised about head coach Tom Thibodeau in previous seasons.

When the starters play that many minutes in the regular season and don’t get a win, there is a clear issue. There is an even bigger concern because the Knicks’ defense struggled, giving up 132 points, while the Pacers hit 21 of 46 on threes.

When checking the Knicks vs 76ers stats, consider that Philadelphia is not a great 3-point shooting team, making just 11.6 per game, but perimeter defense is still an issue for New York to solve down the line.

However, the Knicks’ new additions have looked great on offense. Despite averaging 114.4 points per game, which is ranked 14th, they have the second-best offensive rating in the league at 120.1.

Given how good the Knicks’ offense has been, their defensive struggles, and the return of Embiid, we’ll back the over in this matchup in our NBA picks.

Questions of the Day

Who is going to lead this game in scoring?

The Knicks offense has gone through Jalen Brunson, and if this is going to be an impactful win, he will need to have a big game.

Is it worth looking at Joel Embiid’s prop bet lines?

Embiid is still one of the best players in the NBA when healthy, but the only concern is how healthy he will be for this game.
