Suns Laying Double-Digits
The Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns are set to renew hostilities when they collide at the Footprint Center tonight. Oddsmakers opened with the high-flying Suns massively favored at home to come through with the victory at the expense of the struggling, injury-riddled Lakers.
Since markets opened, the NBA odds and lines have only swelled further in their favor. Now, the Suns are tipped as the 11-point favorites in point-spread betting markets while the total is projected to 233 points.
With the NBA betting market cornered with the hosts so convincingly, it raises the question whether the Lakers, with their season hanging by the slimmest of threads, actually have a shot to pull off the upset. Can the Lakers win and/or cover or is this game a foregone conclusion?
Lakers In Dire Straits
The Los Angeles Lakers are in dire straits, sitting in eleventh place in the Western Conference standings, two games back of tenth-placed San Antonio Spurs. They’re riding a six-game losing streak into Tuesday’s pivotal showdown with the Phoenix Suns, a run of negative form that has them slipping to a woeful 2-8-0 straight up (SU) record and a 4-6-0 record against the spread (ATS) in their last ten games.
The LA Lakers are coming off back-to-back home losses, losing 114-111 to the New Orleans Pelicans and 129-118 to the Denver Nuggets. On the road, the Lakers have lost their last three games, losing to the Pelicans 116-108, to the Dallas Mavericks 128-110, and to the Utah Jazz 122-109.

Pre-season NBA Championship Odds had the Lakers favored to win a second title in the last three seasons. Today, such an achievement seems improbable. Indeed, now, they’re the quintessential longshots in betting online markets at +15000.
The Phoenix Suns are soaring atop the Western Conference standings, boasting a solid lead over the rest of the field. The Suns are 62-16 on the season and seven points ahead of their nearest rivals, the Memphis Grizzlies (55-23).
Phoenix’s advantage dwindled in the last two games following back-to-back losses as the Suns slipped to an 8-2-0 SU and 6-4-0 ATS record in their last ten games.
The Suns were riding a stellar nine-game winning streak before these setbacks – they lost a key matchup with Memphis 122-114 and then fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder 117-96. That said, they’ve still managed to clinch a second straight division title.

Overall, the Suns are 31-8 SU both at home and on the road. They’re 42-36-0 ATS on the season, which includes a 7.8 winning margin on average and a +1.7 differential versus the spread. As home favorites, the Suns are 19-19-0 ATS with a 9.6 winning margin on average and a +0.7 differential versus the spread.
Lakers vs Suns Head-to-Head
The Phoenix Suns have the 7-3-0 SU and ATS advantage over the Los Angeles Lakers while the total has gone 4-6-0 in the last ten games. Most recently, the Suns obliterated the Lakers 140-111, easily crushing the -7½ point spread at the sportsbook exchange. It marked their sixth-straight win since last summer when they eliminated the Lakers from the playoffs.

Lakers vs Suns Prediction
High hopes preceded the Lakers into this season. But injuries, among other things, have setback the Lakers substantially – exposing Los Angeles’ lack of depth on the bench, which was always a concern despite their favorable early NBA odds. So, to say LA’s season hasn’t gone to plan is an understatement. It’s the understatement to end all understatements!
As far as their upcoming contest with the Phoenix Suns, the Lakers are likely to be shorthanded again. Kendrick Nunn (knee) is out for the season, LeBron James (ankle) is questionable and Anthony Davis (foot) is also questionable for Tuesday’s clash.
Without their biggest stars, it’s hard to see how the Lakers cover this game, never mind pull off the outright upset. After all, they’ve struggled to beat Phoenix in six straight games.
The Suns veered off track recently, but it hasn’t cost them the top spot in the conference. They can’t afford to drop more games though, with just four left on the season and the Grizzlies breathing down their necks.
The Suns are poised to sweep the series with the Lakers after winning all three previous contests this season. So, this is going to be a matchup that the Suns will relish. They’ve dominated the Lakers in recent history and they’ll fancy their chances of heaping more misery on the hobbled visitors.
