Now back to full strength, the Boston Celtics welcome the Brooklyn Nets in a battle between Atlantic Division rivals. The NBA odds have this as a dead pick ’em although Brooklyn has won and covered 8 of its last 10 against Boston. These teams have won three straight and have had identical records (4-1) in their last five games.
With improved defenses, this one may come down to which team’s star players can get that extra bucket or two to separate themselves. Boston would be a solid bet online as an underdog so watch the betting lines to see which side the market moves.
NBA Odds Preview
Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN)
- Point Spread: Brooklyn pk (-110), Boston pk (-110)
- Total: Over 216 (-110), Under 216 (-110)
Nets: A Pretender To The Throne?
Brooklyn may be sitting atop the Eastern Conference, but this team has “pretender” written all over it. The Nets are 13-4 as favorites but only 7-10-1 against the spread (ATS). It’s only 5-5 against teams at .500 or better and it’s 6-5 in games decided by ten or more points.
One quick glimpse at the Nets’ wins and losses reveals where this team stands: blowout wins over Detroit (4-12), Orlando (4-14), and Oklahoma City (6-11) and blowout losses against Milwaukee (10-8), Golden State (15-2), and Chicago (12-6).
As far as NBA predictions go, the Nets have been bonafide tomato can crushers. But when they face “real” competition, they get folded. Of course, this all depends on where Boston falls in the hierarchy as this team is in transition.
Celtics: Blow Up the Celtics?
Jaylen Brown returned on Monday to put on an emphatic performance despite being limited in an 18-point win over Houston. Still, his name is mostly circulating due to fan-made trade proposals and rumors. It isn’t Brown’s fault, but he may be the most valuable asset Boston has.
The Celtics won’t trade a core player without it making the team considerably better. https://t.co/ScjGyhpCjM

The Celtics are 9.7-points better with Brown on the court versus 7.2 with Tatum. He also has a higher PER, true shooting percent, and box plus-minus over his fellow All-Star. But Boston is in a slow decline and the fans are getting as anxious as the NBA when a player says anything against China.
But executive Brad Stevens will let this rade, especially as the team seems to be rallying around new coach Ime Udoka’s defense-first approach. Boston remains a playoff team and will be a tough out every night regardless of who they face.
Let’s lean on the Celtics here as they should be the better defensive team. While Brooklyn has won nine of its last eleven, this team has not beaten top competition this season. Its two wins over Cleveland are likely its best results and it even failed to cover the spread on both games.
Boston has, at least, alternated covering the spread (10-8) and are a more reliable team in terms of online sports betting. It has won its last five home games and should match up well against Brooklyn even if Kevin Durant has another spectacular outing.
Pick: Boston Celtics pk (-110)
Nets and Celtics games tend to be lower scoring than the lines predict. The under has hit on 20 of their 36 games. However, it’s been more of a higher-scoring affair when Brooklyn visits Boston. The total has gone over in five of their last six meetings in the TD Garden. We don’t expect this trend to end this Wednesday.
