Timberwolves Riding Four-Game Winning Streak
The Minnesota Timberwolves try to finish the preseason with a perfect record when they host the Brooklyn Nets in the last tuneup before the regular season for both teams on Friday night. Minnesota has won its first four preseason games, including a win on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.
Brooklyn got its first preseason victory on Wednesday, topping the host Milwaukee Bucks to snap a two-game losing skid. Nets Getting New Big Three Going
The Brooklyn Nets have been in a constant state of flux over the last few months, but as they head into their preseason finale on Friday, they’re hoping things are starting to be a little more settled. The team looked good in winning at Milwaukee on Wednesday night, with the big three of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Ben Simmons all making solid contributions to the victory.
Simmons has been the biggest question mark for the team after he sat out the 2021-22 season. If Wednesday is any indicator, he should be just fine. He went for seven points, eight rebounds, and 10 assists in the victory, helping to set up the team’s two big scorers, Durant and Irving.
Durant is also looking focused on helping the team win after an offseason of trade requests. Durant had 19 points, eight assists, and three steals on Wednesday and seems happy with his current group of teammates.
Irving will be starting the season on the court after he went through his vaccination controversy that limited his playing time in 2021-22. Irving had 23 points, seven rebounds, and four assists against the Bucks, hitting 4 of 10 from 3-point range.
Timberwolves Looking to Build on Fast Start
The wins won’t count in the regular-season standings, but the Minnesota Timberwolves are certainly feeling confident after putting together four straight preseason wins. Now, the team is ready to add All-Star center Rudy Gobert to fellow All-Star big man Karl-Anthony Towns in a game for the first time on Friday night.
Gobert has been eased into action after he played in the EuroBasket tournament over the summer. Towns was dealing with a non-COVID illness that has kept him out of some games. The pairing of the two big men has been anticipated since the Timberwolves acquired Gobert during the offseason.
“I’ve always tried to approach it like if I can get the two bigs to be on the same page with each other and work the dynamics around that, that’s seemingly been the recipe,” Minnesota head coach Chris Finch said of the pairing of the two big men. “We’re kind of starting to figure that part out.”
Towns averaged 24.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game a season ago, while Gobert led the NBA in rebounding with 14.7 per game while also averaging 15.6 points and 2.1 blocks with the Utah Jazz in 2021-22.
Nets vs Timberwolves Head-To-Head
The Minnesota Timberwolves earned a split of the season series with the Brooklyn Nets with a win at home in January, snapping a three-game losing streak in the rivalry. Brooklyn had swept both meetings between the clubs in 2020-21.
Prior to the 2020-21 season, Minnesota had a five-game winning streak against the Nets, though the last two contests in that streak went to overtime. The NBA lines for Friday’s contest are favoring the Timberwolves slightly.
