Boston is currently sixth in the Eastern Conference and in a spot to avoid the play-in tournament. However, a loss to the Spurs could see it slip down the rankings.
San Antonio has a play-in tournament spot approaching, but there is time to improve on that position. It looms as an important game and the online sportsbook has Boston as slight favorites.
Boston Seeking Late Run
The Boston Celtics haven’t made it easy on themselves, but a win over San Antonio would put them in a good position.
After suffering three consecutive losses to Brooklyn, Charlotte, and Oklahoma City, Boston fired back with a win over the Hornets. It was a much-needed victory after losing to the Thunder, which was a disastrous loss.
There is little consistency with the Celtics and it has put them in a tough position. The talent on the roster is good enough to lead the East. However, there is a lack of leadership and a lackadaisical offensive structure.
Boston will need to show its best form over the next few weeks. Otherwise, it will draw a tough first-round matchup and we’re not sure if they’re good enough to win.
The Celtics are, however, capable of beating San Antonio. The four-point loss to the Spurs earlier this season should play on their minds and revenge could be in order. It won’t take an individual performance; it requires the Celtics to play team basketball as they’re at their best when the ball moves.
Spurs Hanging Around
San Antonio is doing a good job of hanging around in the Western Conference and it could pay dividends with a spot in the play-in tournament.
It’s not the ideal situation for this team, but given its 31-30 record, it shouldn’t be complaining. The Spurs scored three consecutive wins, including a win over the flying Washington Wizards, before losing to Miami.
We weren’t surprised at the loss in Miami. It came following an overtime win and it was their third straight road game. Boston makes it four on the bounce, but this team is resilient and capable of producing an upset.

NBA lines have Spurs as outsiders, which is fair given they’re on the road. However, the Spurs have been in better form than Boston and they already have a win over the Celtics.
Coach Gregg Popovich always has something up his sleeve in the weeks before the playoffs start, so we wouldn’t be surprised if San Antonio wins.
A big loss for San Antonio was that of Derrick White, who is not expected to make a return this season.
“It doesn’t look good. … But other people lose players also and you are expected to move on, and that’s what we’ll do,” Popovich told ExpressNews.com.
“I think that Devin (Vassell) will start, so we can keep Lonnie (Walker) in his role that he is playing now coming off the bench, kind of like Manu (Ginobili) did for us to give us that little bounce.”
Spurs Dominate Meetings
The San Antonio Spurs have an excellent record against Boston and it could continue.
They are 14-3-1 against the spread in the last 18 meetings in Boston and 15-5-1 ATS in the last 21 meetings overall, which makes the +165 odds look great.
Recent betting trends are also in favor of the Spurs, which are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four and 4-0-1 in their last five road games against a team with a winning home record.
Boston is 5-1 ATS in the last six games against a team with a winning record, but that’s where the betting trends end for the Celtics.
Spurs vs Celtics Game Pick
Boston is expected to win at TD Garden, but bettors get better value with the San Antonio Spurs, especially now that the line has moved from an open of +140 to the current +165.
Not only have they already beaten Boston 110-106, but they are better at closing out the season. Boston is in tricky waters and there isn’t much confidence in the camp.
San Antonio has a coach who has a knack of getting lower-rated players to improve throughout the season. DeMar DeRozan has improved significantly over the last few months and he’s good enough to match the scoring of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
