The Minnesota Timberwolves are trying to find some consistency in the early part of the NBA season when they face the host Chicago Bulls on Thursday night. The Timberwolves, one of the top NBA picks to contend in the Western Conference, have alternated wins and losses in their last five games, though they’re coming off a victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday.

The Bulls are just trying to get back on the winning track, having dropped three in a row, including a 20-point road loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.

The NBA odds are favoring the visiting Timberwolves, who are listed as an 8½-point favorite. Betting on Minnesota to get the straight-up win will get you -350 odds on the moneyline, compared to the Bulls being listed at +280 to pull the outright upset. The over/under has been set at 227½ points.

Here’s a closer look at this contest and some information you can use to help you make some winning NBA bets.

2 Bets To Put Down On Timberwolves vs Bulls

1. Minnesota a Work in Progress

While the Timberwolves are coming off an appearance in the Western Conference finals a season ago, this team is still learning its way after a major trade late in the offseason that dominated NBA news. Acquiring Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo from the New York Knicks and dealing away All-Star forward Karl-Anthony Towns in the same trade was a major shakeup for Minnesota.

Still, the team is working through its new chemistry. Randle has become the team’s leading facilitator with 4.7 assists per game. The former All-Star is also second on the team in scoring at 21.4 points per game while grabbing 6.4 rebounds a contest.

Of course, the lead dog for the Timberwolves is guard Anthony Edwards, who is putting up 27.3 points per game. He’s tough for any defender to stop one-on-one, and when he gets going, he can fill up the scorebook.

Chicago is going to have to find a way to shut down Edwards, though it won’t be easy when considering Timberwolves vs Bulls stats. The 23-year-old averaged 30.0 points in two games against Chicago a season ago.

The Bulls are also not good at shutting any opponent down, having allowed 119.4 points per game to rank 24th in the league. The versatile Timberwolves are going to cause too many problems for Chicago, leading to an easy Minnesota win.

2. Under a Solid Bet as Neither Team is Great Offensively

As stated, the Timberwolves are still learning their team chemistry as the season goes, so while they have a winning record, their offense is not hitting on all cylinders yet. Minnesota is averaging 111.7 points, good for a 19th-place tie in the league.

Chicago isn’t much better. It had some major personnel changes in the offseason as well, with DeMar DeRozan now plying his trade in Sacramento. The Bulls are just one spot above the Timberwolves in the scoring department, averaging 113.0 points.

The total for this game is set at 227½ points, so one or both teams would have to outperform their average offensive output.

We just don’t see it. Chicago is on the second night of a back-to-back and managed just 99 points with leading scorer Zach LaVine (22.7 points per game) missing a second straight game with a thigh injury. LaVine is a game-time decision for Thursday’s game, but it’s hard to see him coming back and being overly effective offensively.

Look for Minnesota to take care of business early and cruise to the win in this one, with neither team reaching their season average in scoring. The under is the way to go in our NBA predictions on this one.
