Atlanta Favored To Extend Home Streak Against Arizona
Backup quarterbacks and porous defenses will be the story when the Arizona Cardinals visit the Atlanta Falcons. These teams are already out of playoff contention and are playing for no more than pride. But on the NFL betting lines, the two have been a lot better than their actual records. Atlanta has slightly favored here thanks to a nine-game home winning streak against Arizona.

Colt’s Cardinals Could Roll
Ol’ reliable backup quarterback Colt McCoy returns to start against Atlanta after clearing the NFL’s concussion protocol. The 12-year pro will restore some stability in the Cardinal’s offense, which has been next to inept without him. McCoy has an 87.2 passer rating and has completed 71 percent of his throws in 12 games (six starts) for Arizona.

He has thrown just one touchdown pass and has been picked off three times. But the defenses of San Francisco, Denver and New England are significant steps above Atlanta’s. McCoy is good enough to outplay Atlanta’s defense, which is 23rd in scoring (23.3 points) and 28th in yards (373).
Still, expectations should remain low for the Cards. Arizona is just 1-3 as an NFL pick against the spread (ATS) in McCoy’s four games with the team. The team has also turned the ball over at least twice in its last five games.
Falcons Have Crashed and Burned
At one point, the Falcons were one of the best teams to bet on online. Now, Atlanta has gone 2-7 ATS in its last nine games. The defense has been bad but the offense has been as well. The Falcons were held under 20 points in seven of these games. That’s a far cry from their first six, where they averaged over 24 points.
The struggles prompted the team to roll with Desmond Ridder, their rookie quarterback. And thus far, it has been a brutal experience for him. Ridder has completed 59.3 percent of his throws for no touchdowns and no interceptions through two starts. The offense scored a total of 27 points.
With how ineffective Atlanta’s offense has been, the total has gone under in six of its last seven games. But Ridder is not short on confidence and should get better over time. That’s the optimistic belief and the online sportsbook is giving his team the benefit of the doubt versus Arizona.
