Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins began their new era under head coach Mike McDaniel facing Bill Belichick, Mac Jones, and the New England Patriots.
The Pats made the playoffs last year while the Dolphins did not, so this was a measuring stick. Miami insisted on a new voice and a new frame of mind for its team, which has languished in mediocrity for a long time.
It has been nearly 40 years since the Dolphins last played in a Super Bowl. McDaniel coached a team that looked hungrier and more physical than New England, which was a surprise.
The offense didn’t do much, but the defense was spectacular, holding New England to seven points while creating a touchdown on a fumble recovery caused by a backside strip of Jones.
If that’s the defense we see from Miami throughout this season, the Dolphins will be a factor as long as they avoid turnovers and costly situational mistakes. That’s exactly what Tua Tagovailoa and the offense did in Week 1.
Baltimore Ravens
Many who bet online had the Ravens to roll in Week 1 and they did. They played a Jets team that did not have Zach Wilson – a former No. 2 overall NFL draft pick – at quarterback.
The Baltimore Ravens feasted on former Baltimore Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco, who is a shell of the player who once won a title for the Ravens (nine years ago).
Baltimore limited the Jets to three points until New York scored a late and meaningless touchdown to make the final score 24-9.
Lamar Jackson did not have to do much on a day when his defense did the heavy lifting. However, he did look sharp with several pinpoint touchdown passes of 55, 25, and 17 yards.
With Baltimore comfortably ahead in the second half, Jackson was able to hand the ball off, sit back, and not overextend himself, which is an outcome the Ravens would love to replicate a lot this year.
The story in this one could be different. We’ll see if the Ravens can back the Dolphins’ defense off the line of scrimmage with sharp passing – something New England was unable to do.
Dolphins vs Ravens Injury Report
Dolphins who are out for this game: safety Clayton Fejedelem, cornerback Byron Jones, linebacker Calvin Munson, fullback John Lovett, tight end Adam Shaheen, and cornerback Trill Williams. This is a pretty clean report overall.
Baltimore has running back J.K. Dobbins listed as day-to-day, along with offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley, and cornerback Marcus Peters. These are more significant absences than what Miami is dealing with.
