Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals saw their offense underperform yet again in a 19-17 road loss to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday. Play-calling has been an issue, as coach Zac Taylor is predictable in early-down situations. Plus, the run game has struggled mightily, 30th in yards per carry and 25th in rush yards per game.

There were some positives in the losing effort, with the offensive line improving. It did its job in pass protection, and the run game had success (4.8 yards per carry). Cincinnati needs to continue a more balanced attack here.

It was another good effort by the defense, having limited one of the league’s more explosive offenses in the Ravens, The secondary had a nice showing, holding the Ravens to 170 passing yards. Defensive end Sam Hubbard has been an X-factor, enjoying a career season to date.

Cincinnati will eventually solve its problems offensively, but it needs to happen sooner rather than later with the defending AFC champions.

New Orleans Saints

While injuries and dire turnover problems mount, the New Orleans Saints have managed to stay competitive. They’re last in turnovers differential (-8), leading the NFL with 13 giveaways through five games. Furthermore, quarterback Jameis Winston, running back Alvin Kamara, wide receivers Michael Thomas and Chris Olave, cornerback Marshon Lattimore and safety Marcus Maye have been in and out of the lineup. All of these players are instrumental to New Orleans’ success, and without them, winning isn’t easy.

Kamara returned to action last week, looking back to normal. He had 194 scrimmage yards in the 39-32 win against the Seattle Seahawks.

Heading into Week 6, Winston, Thomas, Olave, Lattimore and Maye remain questionable, so don’t forget to look at the injury reports.

If New Orleans is to take down Cincinnati, it must dominate the trenches. The run game comes off a terrific showing (235 yards), and the Bengals are without one of the NFL’s best run stuffers, defensive tackle D.J. Reader. Moreover, Cincy’s offensive line has been susceptible. The pass rush must dominate with key secondary players potentially out. Defensive ends Cameron Jordan and Marcus Davenport lead the rush.
