Two of the NFL’s most passionate fan bases will be fired up by teams that seem to be heading in the right direction heading into the 2022 season.
Seven of the top 51 selections in the 2022 NFL Draft were made by the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles so there will be plenty of attention focused on these talented newcomers on Friday night.
According to the NFL betting lines, the Eagles (+155) aren’t far behind the Dallas Cowboys in the odds to win the NFC East title. The Jets should be an improved team but they are still a distant fourth at +2000 in the odds to win the AFC East.
New York Jets
With five first-round selections and two second-round picks in the last two years, the rebuilding process is in full swing for the Jets.
After addressing the offense with the selection of quarterback Zach Wilson and offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker in the first 14 picks of the 2021 draft, the New York Jets picked cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner fourth overall and traded back into the first round to take defensive end Jermaine Johnson.
The offense wasn’t ignored, with Ohio State receiver Garrett Wilson and Iowa State running back Breece Hall taken with picks Nos. 10 and 36.
The offense did take a bit of a hit with the news that starting tackle Mekhi Becton suffered what could be a season-ending knee injury.

Adding dynamic receiver A.J. Brown from the Tennessee Titans and selecting mammoth defensive lineman Jordan Davis with the 13th overall pick gives Philadelphia building blocks on both sides of the ball.
It is still uncertain if Jalen Hurts is indeed the quarterback who will lead the Eagles where they want to go. The addition of Brown was followed by last year’s pick of Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith to go with tight end Dallas Goedert. Smith is considered to be day-to-day with a groin injury. It would be surprising to see much of him in the preseason until he is 100 percent healthy.
The Philadelphia Eagles are giving Hurts plenty of options in the passing game. Smith is dealing with a hamstring issue so that could slow his progress during the preseason.
Davis was joined by teammate Nakobe Dean from national champion Georgia and they are very much a part of the process building the Philadelphia defense.
Jets vs Eagles Injury Report
Along with Becton being out, fellow offensive lineman Connor McDermott and cornerback D.J. Reed are questionable. Offensive tackle Greg Senat is on the IR/non-football injury list
Veteran center Jason Kelce has a chance to be back for the season opener but won’t be playing on Friday. Receivers Greg Ward and John Hightower, running back Kenneth Gainwell and cornerback Kary Vincent are all questionable.
Linebacker Shaun Bradley (neck), linebacker Christian Elliss, tight end Jaeden Graham and offensive lineman Brett Toth are all considered questionable for the regular-season opener.
Jets vs Eagles Head-to-Head
The Jets-Eagles preseason matchups are nothing new. They have met 20 times over the last 21 preseasons. The teams played to an entertaining 31-31 tie in the last meeting that went well over the 33½-point total. The offensive explosion was a bit unusual as the previous four matchups had a combined total of 71 points scored.
Five straight preseason games between the teams went under the total before the 2021 offensive showcase. The last time a team won back-to-back preseason games in the series came when Philadelphia won 24-14 in 2011 and 28-10 in 2012.
The Eagles have won the last nine regular-season games against the Jets and that includes last year’s 33-18 win that went over the 44-point total. The last time the Jets covered against Philadelphia in the regular season came in 1996 when they lost 21-20 as an eight-point underdog at home.

Jets vs Eagles Prediction
The Jets have been favored just once in their last 29 games during the regular season, but this game is fluctuating between the visiting Jets being listed as the slight favorite and the game being a pick’em.
The Eagles are 0-4-1 in their last five preseason games, as their last win in the preseason came against Jacksonville in 2019. Philadelphia is 3-9 against the NFL betting lines in the last 12 preseason contests. The Jets have been more successful in the preseason, going 4-1-1 over the last six games. They are 4-2 against the spread in those games.
The 35½-point total is one of the highest numbers among this week’s games. Another 60-point game seems unlikely but this does have the potential for some points to be scored.
