Top Two Seeds Clash in Super Bowl 57
Classic Super Bowl Matchup
It doesn’t get much better than this with the teams with the best records in the NFL during the regular season meeting in Sunday’s Super Bowl 57.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, expected to be named the regular-season Most Valuable Player, will try to lead Kansas City to its second Super Bowl championship in the last four years as they play for the NFL title for the third time during that stretch.
Philadelphia is five years removed from its last Super Bowl with a new coach at the helm this time. Nick Sirianni, who spent four years as an assistant coach with the Chiefs, will be calling the shots against Andy Reid, one of the winningest coaches in NFL history.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Mahomes are the front-runners to be named Super Bowl MVP.
There has been mostly good news on the injury front for both teams.
Receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee), Kadarius Toney (ankle) and Justin Watson (illness), and offensive lineman Trey Smith (ankle) are trending in the right direction for the Chiefs. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle), linebacker Willie Gay (shoulder) and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (concussion) are questionable.
The Chiefs led the NFL in yards per game, points per game, and passing yards per game. The Eagles were third in total offense and scoring offense. Philadelphia did lead the NFL with 70 sacks and finished second in total defense.
One concern for the Eagles is that while the Chiefs were in the top 10 in points per game in each of the four quarters, Philadelphia was 27th out of 32 teams in points scored in the first quarter and 20th in fourth-quarter points.
Something to consider for those making Super Bowl picks: Kansas City has covered in each of the last six games against NFC teams.
For the Eagles, offensive linemen Landon Dickerson (elbow) and Lane Johnson (groin) are expected to play. There are concerns about the availability of cornerback Avonte Maddox.

Mahomes-Kelce Duo Ready to Roll
The fact that Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce’s brother, Jason, is the starting center for the Eagles have gotten just a little bit of attention in the days leading into Super Sunday. The reality is that Travis Kelce would have been a headliner even if there was no sibling rivalry to write about.
Kelce is second in NFL postseason history with 1,467 receiving yards. Yes, more playoff games are needed now to reach the Super Bowl. Still, Kelce has more than 90 receiving yards in seven of his last eight postseason games. He should be busy once again.
Keep an eye on the status of running back Edwards-Helaire. He won’t be featured back if he is active for the game as it is rookie Isiah Pacheco’s show right now. Still, he could be a factor in the game.
The Chiefs have thrived even after trading Tyreek Hill to Miami but they will miss Mecole Hardman, who has been ruled out of the Super Bowl. Still, there are enough difference-makers on offense with Kelce and Mahomes topping that list.
Smith-Schuster has been quiet in the playoffs but was the most productive pass catcher other than Kelce in the regular season.
JuJu Smith-Schuster said playing with QB Patrick Mahomes … “it’s like pulling a rabbit out of a hat, a magic trick.”

Four of Kansas City’s last five games finished under the Las Vegas odds total.
Dialing Up the Pressure
It would be a major upset to learn that the last Kansas City Super Bowl appearance wasn’t one of the most viewed videos in the last week or two.
Injuries on the offensive line sabotaged any chance the Chiefs had to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV following the 2020 season.
Mahomes was under constant pressure and that was a major reason why the Buccaneers emerged victorious.
This Eagles team was easily the leader in sacks during the regular season, posting 15 more than any other squad. Haason Reddick led the way with 16 sacks, Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, and Javon Hargrave had 11 each while Fletcher Cox added seven more.

Like that Tampa Bay team, Philadelphia will be able to bring pressure from various spots on the defense. Kansas City used free agency, the trade market, and the draft to address the offensive line. and the Eagles would like to have people second-guessing those moves on Sunday night.
Philadelphia has covered against the NFL lines in just two of its six games.

Chiefs vs Eagles Head-to-Head
Kansas City has won each of the last three meetings and that includes a 42-30 win on the road as a seven-point favorite on Oct. 3, 2021. Mahomes threw for five touchdown passes as Reid became the first coach in NFL history to win 100 games with two different franchises.
The teams have met every four years dating back to 2001 so there isn’t much in those games that factor into the NFL odds.
The road team has won five of the previous seven meetings, not that it matters with this game being at a neutral site.
Four of the last five meetings went over the total.

Chiefs vs Eagles Picks and Prediction
Predicted Score: Eagles 31, Chiefs 27
- Worth Betting on the Moneyline?
This is about as close to a Pick’em as any Super Bowl in recent memory so there won’t be much of a payout regardless of which way those making Super Bowl picks chose to go. The favored Eagles are priced at -125 with the Chiefs at +105.
The Eagles opened at -135 and the Chiefs at +115 so there has been little movement in the NFL odds.
- Worth Betting ATS?
The game opened with the Eagles favored by two points before it moved to a one-point line. It is starting to head to 1½. While 21 Super Bowls finished as one-possession games, the only one to be decided by one point came in 1991, when a late field goal by Buffalo’s Scott Norwood was no good to give the New York Giants a 20-19 win. When it comes time to make a Super Bowl bet, go with the outright winner rather than hope for a one-point difference.
- Worth Betting on the Totals?
Each of the last four Super Bowls has finished under the total. The last time the total went over happened to be the most recent time that Philadelphia played in the game.
The line opened at 49 but with the amount of money coming in on the over, it has moved to 51. Will that be high enough?
