Patriots vs Dolphins AFC East Betting Analysis

AFC East Showdown

The AFC East race is getting an early start when the New England Patriots head down to the Sunshine State to face the Miami Dolphins.

The teams took many different approaches when it came to building the roster around their young quarterbacks. New England continues to use the draft while it looks for players on the rebound. Former Dolphins No. 1 receiver DeVante Parker could play a key role in catching passes from Patriots second-year quarterback Mac Jones. Miami traded for electrifying receiver Tyreek Hill and added some other key offensive players during the offseason.

Patriots vs Dolphins Odds, Game Preview, Live Stream, Picks & Predictions

The NFL betting lines have Patriots and Dolphins tied for second at +450 odds to win the AFC East championship.

Let’s check the latest NFL picks, stats, injury reports, and NFL odds for the Patriots vs Dolphins. We’ve plenty of NFL predictions for you to consider.

New England Patriots

There’s been plenty of chatter on New England’s decision not to have an offensive coordinator this season and how it could impact the development of Jones. The bigger issue could be a lack of playmakers for Jones to throw the ball to. There have also been suggestions that second-year running back Rhomandre Stevenson could challenge Damien Harris for the No. 1 ball-carrying duties this season.

New England very quietly had the fourth-ranked defense in the NFL in 2021. The Patriots will look a little different on that side of the ball without linebackers Kyle Van Noy and Donta Hightower, cornerback JC Jackson and edge rusher Chase Winovich.

Miami Dolphins

Few teams were as active in the offseason as the Dolphins with the additions of receivers Hill and Cedrick Wilson, offensive linemen Terron Armstead and Connor Williams, linebacker Melvin Ingram and running back Chase Edmonds. Miami just missed the playoffs without those players so clearly the Dolphins are all in as they look to become a factor in the AFC.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa could be the biggest winner as he has a talented supporting cast to work with. He is also one of the team captains.

Miami was in the middle of the pack on defense in 2021 and will look to improve on that mark. Perhaps Ingram will rediscover his form from earlier in his career. The Miami Dolphins still feature Xavien Howard, one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL.

Patriots vs Dolphins Injury Report

For the New England Patriots, receiver Jakobi Meyers (knee) is probable, receiver Ty Montgomery (ankle) and offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn (back) are questionable while linebacker Raekwon McMillan (knee) is out indefinitely.

Rookie receiver Tyquan Thornton (collarbone) is expected to be out until late October while defensive lineman Daniel Ekuale is suspended for the first two games of the season.

For Miami, running backs Salvon Ahmed (head), Chase Edmonds (groin), Alec Ingold (hamstring), Myles Gaskin (neck) and Raheem Mostert (knee), tight end Tanner Conner (knee), defensive backs Nik Needham (quadricep) and Eric Rowe (pectoral), linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel (illness) as well as receiver Jaylen Waddle (lower body) are questionable. Defensive backs Clayton Fejedelem and Byron Jones (hip) are out indefinitely.

Patriots vs Dolphins Head-to-Head

Miami has won four of the last five games against the Patriots. The Dolphins won both games in 2021, edging the Patriots 17-16 on the road as a 3½-point underdog on Sept. 12 and taking the rematch 33-24 as a six-point underdog. It was the first time Miami swept the regular-season series with New England since 2000.

The winner of the last 18 contests between the division rivals has also covered against the NFL odds.

New England outgained Miami in both games but two defensive touchdowns in the second contest led the Dolphins to the sweep of the two contests.

Patriots vs Dolphins Betting Lines

Patriots vs Dolphins Prediction

The Dolphins enter the game as a slight favorite according to the sportsbook. There are a lot of moving parts for the Dolphins to work with so it will be worth watching to see how quickly the new additions fit in. Also, check the status of the running backs as they all landed on the injury report.

New England has seen multiple changes in the offensive line in recent years and that could play a factor against the Miami defense.

This has the potential to be one of the most competitive games in Week 1 with money coming in on both sides.

Something to consider for those who bet online: The Patriots are 1-4 against the spread in the last five games and have covered in just one of the last five meetings with Miami.

These teams seem pretty evenly matched so going with the home team seems like the right call.
